Preserving wwii antiques

Recommended Posts

I just recently was given an old WWII US flag from a US destroyer. It has 48 stars and is in very good condition. I would like to keep it in its current condition but i dont know how.

Anyone have any experience with something like this or know of someone to talk to?

Thanks. smile_o.gif

Whatever you do.....don't wash it! Best way to preserve it is to frame it using ACID-FREE!!! materials (matt-board/backing board). Don't glue it or pin it or anything like that...just use pressure to hold it in place, without stretching it. Put some glass in the front and keep out of direct sunlight...or anywhere that gets too hot. That should keep it pretty good for a very long time, unless it has mould or some other sort problem. If so then it's time to call in the pros.

Hope that helps smile_o.gif

The best way is to keep it in a Air-less space because the air will make in a very bad condition ( in the begin nothing happens but the flag is slowly falling apart then till you take it of from the wall and fffsss no more flag ) so follow this step:

1:- Buy a special Transparent plastic case ( what you can close and can such all the air out of it )

2:- Clean the Flag very good so no dust or dirty pieces will stay on

3:- But it in the Plastic case

4:- Close the Case

5:- But it in where you want it.

And voila you have your Flag conserved and well wink_o.gif

I certainly wouldn't try cleaning it.You might end up damaging it beyond repair wink_o.gif

I collect bits and bobs of militaria...I have a 1937 Belgian army helmet, a 50s era Belgian army helmet, a couple of gas masks (+/- 60 years old) the frame from a Vulcan bomber "MFD", a 27mm Mauser round (training rock.gif ) an AK-47 baillonette and a few other bits and pieces smile_o.gif

Nothing to open a museum but nevertheless a nice bookshelf type "exhibition" biggrin_o.gif

The best way to preserve WWII relics is in loving hands. Trying to get my hands on an M1 Carbine. smile_o.gif

That Garand on the link also isn't an antique.

I don't think 11B would put his Carbine in a shelf. He more likely wants it to be full operational, too. wink_o.gif

It's realy a pain to get your hands on some good weaponry in Holland. I want to purchase a CZ75 which I've seen in some brochures but A: It's too friggin expensive and B: their aren't much shooting ranges here.
