Last chance before go back to wolfstein 3d

i wrote a topic about my troubles few weeks ago : OFP randomly crashed after 5 to 30 minutes and i couldn't play in multi player. It happened after the installation of the patch 1.91.

I tried many things :

read all the avon lady faq (nice job and nice picture of the webmaster tounge_o.gif )

read "all" the topics related to my problem on this forum,

Update my drivers (VIA chipsets, NVidia, Sound blaster),

Update my bios (K7M motherboard),

Update DX 8.1 to 9,

Reinstall OFP with no add ons,

Reinstall Windows (w98 se),

Changed the IDE channel settings,

changed the sound hardware acceleration settings,

try to play in 800x600,

reducing the view range to 900 meters,

cut the antialiasing,

64Mb aperture size in the bios

all those things in many combinations

The crash is very "clean". I am on the desktop and everythings work well (even OFP if i rerun it immediatly).

I made a step forward : the latests VIA 4 in 1 drivers are not good for w98se (read it on the VIA website), so i installed the 4.35 and i can now play in multiplayers and play longer (about 20 to 30 minutes thanks to VIA).

But 20 to 30 minutes it's very short and very boring because the crash don't wait for the end of my play (could be acceptable if).

OFP was one of the most stable game i had : it crashed 1 time a week before the 1.91 and i used it 1 to 5 hours a day (shorts nights).

Now i play Raven Shield who crashed 1 time a day or never crashed (very acceptable). This is the proof for me, that my hardware working well (i had some heat problems but it's fixed). I play other games like Orbiter, Close combat or Europa Universalis but they are less system ressources consummers. But they worked.

So i put this bottle to the sea with my config and flashpoint.rpt (don't think dxdiag report help because it said everythings well). If you have any ideas...

20 Go HDD (2 to 5 Go free for swap i think it's enough for OFP)

GeForce : 4.14.01.4345 (this is not the last but OFP crashed with all versions and the driver was left after an other combination trying)

Hi Scott. Sorry to hear about your problems. Here's my take on it: back in the days I too had a Asus K7M motherboard and had symptoms similar to yours - games crashing unexplicably.

After much research I found the likely reason for my problems: the AMD751 chipset has a fluke/bug in its AGP handling that wasn't fixed until the C1 revision of that chipset. This revision wasn't out until late in the 751:s life, in the summer of 2000. By that time, most manufacturers had switched to the VIA KX133 chipset for their motherboard. Result: not too many K7M:s or other 751-based boards ever had the fixed chipet. I had my faulty board exchanged for a KX133 board that, unfortunately, had a VIA chipset and capacitors that leaked and died a year later (Abit, what'd you expect?) ... ;-)

I could easily replicate the following using both windows 2k and linux, using three different AGP graphics cards:

AGP set to x1 - all is well

AGP set to x2 - random crashes

So, my suggestion is that you try to lower the AGP transfer rate in the BIOS to x1 and see if that helps.

My other guess on your problem is that the memory modules might be giving you trouble. That and the fact that you really need more memory for OFP. 512 MB is a good minimum, I'd say.

Victory is mine

I try the agp x 1 and it doesn't produce any differences but i noticed the game crash after sounds. So i get back to creative site for a driver. And my card wasn't in there list. So i wrote to creative (dear creative, i am very confused, bla, bla) and they gave me a driver. Now it's 4:35 and after 3 hours of play it crash just one time (between two games frozen crash). This time i think all is ok.

So for guys like me, who run a w98 on an old computer i say : don't use the last 4in1 drivers (they crash the computer not only in OFP), and ask for creative the proper driver for your old sound blaster because they don't show all of them.

Now, I am going to bed with sweet dreams about battle fields and dead budies tounge_o.gif
