Assault (CAN)

A little help, please.

Recommended Posts

I am currently working on a 1/35th scale model M1A2 Abrams MBT that I bought a few days ago. I have seen so many of them on the news lately that I was inspired to make a model of one.

The model I bought came with directions and division markings for a woodland camo set-up, but I would like to paint it in a desert camo set-up, ala Desert Storm 2 style. Being the realist and perfectionist that I am, I just can't make up divisional/theatre markings and slap them on my new M1A2 model that I payed $50(CDN) for. This is where your assistance comes in handy.

I need some complete pictures of one (1) complete tank in the DS2 theatre (I need to see 3 or 4 sides of the same tank), I did a google search but it only came up with the obvious sites, like FAS.org and things of that nature. Could anyone here provide me with a link to some recent pictures of operational tanks in Iraq? I'm hoping that one of you might have stumbled onto a good web-site and remembered the URL. smile.gif

Thanks in advance.

Tyler

Jeez, just go down to your nearest Balden books or Barnes and Nobles.

They have tons of info on this sort of stuff.

Heh. I have four WWII Tamiya 1/35th scale tank kits sitting in my cupboard needing to be built. I decided to work on the M4 Sherman instead of the german tanks, because I dont want to tackle zemmeritt coating just yet.

Funny that even as a model, I'll still put it on, even though it was a solution to a non existant problem. biggrin.gif

I havent tried it yet, but that is exactly the technique that I am planning to use. And yeah, I've heard that it's really time consuming.

I also have a Type G Panther with the steel wheels variant. They never applied zimmerit to that that model of tank (Hell, I dont think the steel wheeled variant even saw much service) so I wont have to dive into it.

The Sherman I am going to paint in Canadian colurs, I think. Canadian shermans saw a fair bit of action in Italy, I just need to find some pictures.

They don't, all I need to see is one tank and airbrush the regimental markings on the tank. All they are is simple arrows/lines/squares, so they wouldn't require any real effort to do. It would be even cooler if I knew which markings belonged to which regiment.

I'm also going to paint on those little velcro strips on the front turret arnour that they use for attaching MILES gear. After that all I need is some 1/35 scale ALICE packs that I can attach to the rear storage area. Armoured guys always strap their kit to their tanks when on the move.

Italeri. Well worth the money IMO, the M1 I have is incredibly detailed when it comes to the plastic parts. So far, the fitting of the pieces has been great, very little gaps, which means less putty and sanding for me. smile.gif

Is that some kind of special model paint, or is it the non-slip 'rough' paint that is found on armoured vehicles?

That's funny, I was thinking today that my next model will be a 1/35 Canadian Sherman, and maybe after that a Bren Gun carrier, if I can find a model of one. I was going to get a Leopard 1A4 (W.German) but I never would have been able to find a set of add-on armour, short of actually making it. Plus, I needed some Canadian armoured decals ($18.00) and a replacement FN MAG for the G3 that came with the kit. IE:too much hassle. So I got the M1A2 instead.

BTW, this is my first armoured model ever, it's so nice to not have to worry about propellers, canopies, and gluing fuselage (sp?) halves together. What a pain in the ass. biggrin.gif

It was an anti-magnetic mine coating the germans applied to their tanks. They thought the Russians had magnetic AT mines.

for the 1/35 alice , italeri and academy have a few tank addon kits (supplementary tools , pack , cases , cans and so)

i'll try to do some research

Italeri makes good models at a good price , but if you got the money , always take Tamiya , they're the best

about the Bren carrier , Tamiya has got one , but i think it's not one of there most recents model , a friend of mine got problems with the tracks (vinyl ones) if you get a Tamiya Bren Carrier , think about replacement tracks , and i think there are a few tommies included with the Carrier , but then again , the box might be a little bit old and the sculpture not up to the standards of the moment , but there are a few Dragoon and Verlinden figures productions that could do

the advantage with tanks is that if you fuck something up , there's always a way to get it back right smile.gif (not if you cut your turret in two , but if you mess up the track wheels paint *you add "mud"* or break the rear spot "basket" *you glue a few packs or oil jerrycans*)

a few things you could use in a iraq themed diorama :

Dragon  ref 3808 , modern support weapons

3808.jpg

Dragon ref 3801 , m16/car15 weapon familly

3801.jpg

academy kit no. 1382 or number 8 , US accessory kit

-edit- pic too big

Tamyia ref 35229 , vehicles accessories set

35229.jpg

Tamiya ref 35153 , US desert modern infantry set

35153.jpg

Dragon ref 3020D US tank crew desert

3020D.jpg

Dragon ref 3012D US marines tank killers desert

3012D.jpg

Dragon ref 3011D US 101st air assault desert

3011D.jpg

Dragon ref 3006D US 82nd airborne

3006D.jpg

Dragon ref 3015D US 1st Infantry Division desrt (woodland MOPP pants and jacket)

3015D.jpg

i tried to rassemble easily findable and cheap products without forgetting quality

keep in mind that you can make up anything you want

these GW1 choc chip marines can be painted in 3 tones and with a little work on the helmets (or if with a little bit of luck you find new resin modern helmets with the NVG port and the cat's eyes) you have your GW2 soldiers

you can also varry the soldier's outfit , for exemple a woodland vest and 3 tones pants , woodland pouches and so ...

if some parts are interchangeable between the figures , swap them if you want , that whya , you get new poses

the WW2 accessories packs can be used too since these things arealmost untemporal

if you get the chance to find good (better than the ones from the box) replacement weapons , buy them and use them

i'll try to work out on the landscape and the scenery elements a little bit more tomorrow if you're interested in the diorama idea

ref 1362 , cargo

1362.jpg

ref 1363 tow

1363.jpg

ref 1350 MG

desert camo

to go with your M1 with different markings , new crews , new weapon load out (the MK19 or M2 of the packs higher) and new cargo (packs higher) smile.gif

for the diorama base , if you want to make a diorama :

the M1 is a big beast , and IF you want to include a humvee on the dio , then prepare maybe a 45X35 hard foam (styrodur) thin plate

buy some white building plater to build the base of the ground and to make the big work

once you've modelled the landscape , affine it with light white plater and since iraq is a sandy country , go to your local building materials dealer and buy some really small caliber sand

to colour it , go to an artshop and buy some pastel powders in various tones of brown and tan , mix these powders with your sand in the proportions you want , add a melange of water and wood glue , and you can also add some silica (sp ?) to your melange to make it a little bit lighter

make enough melange to cover your whole base with about 2/3 millimeters of "sand" , with sme spare track parts or if you don't have any , with the tank itself before the painting , print track traces on the ground before your melange gets dry

clean your tracks

once it's done , with the remains of your sand , pastel powders and silica , spray them on the not-yet dry ground

after you've finished your base , you can add vegetations and accessories before the thing gets dry

when you're done , put it in a dry warm place in your house and wait 1 day or 2

Do you have any of your work in picture form that you would care to share with us?

no , you will have to come and see me at the next modelling contest where i live smile.gif

but since i've moved not so long ago , most of my models are at my father's house , i'll try to get some pics

i don't like participating to contests and competitions , some people say i should participate more often , but i don't feel like it , most of my models look pretty simple compared to some other modellers' work

and it's not that hard to learn

I'm not much into dioramas, they take up more space, take more time, but can look good. I like to put all of my detail into the model itself.

I just wish there were more Canadian model sets out there.
