My god!! It's been donkey's-years since I've seen that! And, yeah. This 'user' should have quit playing games, since he was so shit at them biggrin.gif ( it was probably some 5-year-old kid )!

Anyhoo, back on topic...

When it gets to the point that you are worrying over killing a bunch of computer sprites, then I suggest that you stop playing until you think rationally. I mean, they are NOT real, never will be and it's highly unlikely you are going to be asked to bugger off to Africa and shoot some teenagers for real!

Well you have got a point, the ethics of shooting anyone in a virtual world is debatable. But on general consensus it is better than doing it for real.

Don't think you're a loser or whatever you want just because you actually think, most people (including me) play PC games to just kill, have fun and have no implications in the real world.

Sometimes when i'm flying my helicopter (in OFP) and i rocket some infantry or whatever i feel happy that they are dead and gone because they are the 'enemy'. But other times i kill a squad of evil Russians and a lone survivor crawls back as fast as he can trying to get to safety, that's when i'm annoyed that we can't surrender and take prisoners in OFP. if you have self preservation programmed in the AI then it seems silly that you don't have any AI surrendering in real time without mountains of scripting.

I had a point.

True, maybe he was 'having a laugh', anyhow it doesn't change the fact that there are issues with ethics in all these violent games and some people have responded to that.

It's a game, people.

That being said, I find my set of ethics insinuate themselves into my gameplaying in ways I can't control. I use flashbangs and CS gas instead of frags in RS; in the few roleplaying games I've played, I never choose an evil character (petty thief occasionally, but that's it); and I don't really go out of my way to kill innocents in a game like GTA. Not to say it doesn't break down now and then: I know I've set up a few Spetsnaz 'cleansing' missions through the villages of Nogova, and the Mi-17 is my own personal VTOL carpet bomber. But that's about it.

It isn't because I feel empathy for the pixels on the screen or because I think it's wrong or immoral to be (ahem) indiscriminate in a video game; it's just that it isn't my style. Not bloodthirsty, not compassionate, just intent on accomplishing whatever mission is set before me.

Oh yeah, and it's just a game.

A 15 year old teenager firing a rifle at you is still a combatant. I'd shoot as i'd consider my ageing azz to be worth more as well as any fellow comrades. Their "innocents" flees them the moment they engage to kill YOU!!

Very good point there, and plus it's just a game! <!--emo&thumbs-up.gif

Other than that, I think the_unknown_one is pretty

weak-minded do get "disturbed" from shooting smeone in a game.  I'd hate to imagine him in Jenny Craig's weight loss program wink.gif

I actually stopped playing GTA for that reason. I just can't kill inoccents. I remember when I first played that game I was getting used to driving and I lost control into a crowd. Well I was freaked. I was thinking police would be on me, etc. Just not enough consiquences for your action in the game.

Holy Crap, I must be really damn sick, because I used to do driveby shootings in an icecream truck in that game. Eventually, I'd baracade myself in a parking garage and defend myself from the military. Heh heh heh.

Hell its a game, whatever guys.

By the way, "What the shit" is just as right as "What the hell". Its actually funny if said at the right moment.

I think you guys should all take the time to find the families of those fallen pixels, the ones you have snipered, and apologise. I recently said sorry to the parents of some blue, grey and brown pixels that I had killed. I am trying to make amends to them, but now I realise that nothing can make it up when you have lost your pixels. I am truely sorry to all the pixels I have killed confused.gif

and what's your job right now? (or to be?) wink.gif

personally, i have no emotional attachment to game characters. so i consider it as a pixel. only thing that goes through my mind is "will that AI shoot me if i don't shoot it?".

In real life, i probably will not shoot anyone unless it is clear that they are going to shoot me right now.

I think he has a point. I often feel bad when I kill a lone enemy russian.

I remember this one mission I was playing. I managed to kill like ALOT of enemies.

Eventually I stole a tank, I was driving around, and I spotted a lone Russian survivor running away.

I tryed to shoot him but missed. So I got in the drivers seat and chased him. He was running fast and through woods so I chased him far.

Eventually I found him crawling through some bushes and I promptly filled him with machinegun fire.

Then I realized, the Russian soldier had run nearly across half the map to try to escape me.

I could have let him go and just complete the mission.

But I chased him almost half the map and killed him.

Then I felt really bad about it. I mean imagine how frightened he must have been to run that far to escape a tank by someone who just killed all his teamates.

I felt really bad for him and wished that I had let him go.

Anyways, I think you really should think about how far you go in the game. Do whatever it takes to complete the mission, but don't just go around slaughtering. Especially if the enemy is clearly too weak or scared to fight.

I agree. We do not tolerate games like GTA and SOF in our house, myself included. They seem more designed for violence for the sake of violence. These are but just 2 examples, that IMO cross over some very subjective and blurry red line.

Turn off the gore and see how interested in the game you are. Nothing worth playing beyond the gross out factor. I skipped the first one, but conned into the second because of previews and such stating how the gameplay was so much better and ai, yadda, yadda, yadda. Was really disapointed. I don't dislike gore and violence, but there has to be more meat to the game. SOF lacks it. It's a very boring shooter without gore, while something like Max Payne or Splinter Cell, etc don't need gore to make the game something.

I gotta agree with you. There is nothing interesting about SOF beyond seeing which bodyparts detach when buckshot is applied at close range (as it turns out, most of them do). In the main, it's just a subpar shooter with boring singleplayer, vanilla multiplayer, and enemies that die in ways that would make Saddam blush.
