ICOL 0 Posted March 1, 2003 Hi all, I would like to ask the OPFOR community a question. Does anybody know whether it is possible to convert FS2002 models into OPFOR? The reason I ask is because there is a wealth of excellent military/civil aircraft available that would fit nicely into OPFOR. I am aware that modellers on GTA3 sites have been able to convert cars from the NFS series, and STSFC modellers have been able to convert Homeworld and ST Armada files into the game. However, should this not be possible. Perhaps the textures used on the FS2002 models could be used in the creation of OPFOR models. Having read the forums, I have noticed that many modellers have difficulty in creating or texturing their models. Maybe this with assist in the easier creation of their models, as the textures are usually in .BMP format and can easily be converted into tga/paa and pac. ****IMPORTANT***** The above is ONLY a suggestion and should only be done with the consent of the original author. Thanks for any input
jotte 0 Posted March 1, 2003 IIRC the FS 2002 models have a very high polygon count so it would be accctually easier to rebuild it from scratch then to do a mundane polyreduction. Textures could prove usefull though I think.
deadsoldier 0 Posted March 1, 2003 well , most recently made FS adddons are made inGMAx, since theycan animate more parts and nicer and easier in GMAX, like the Project Airbus A320 , it was fully made in GMAX, you can get files from gmax to 3d max- O2. Like he said, High poly might a be aproblem. But other than GMAX made models, i dont think you can convert the FS .mdl files to any readadable 3d program. if anyone know..let us know too. cheers
Wonder 0 Posted March 1, 2003 If anyone says "OFP is not a flight simulator" one more time, i'm gonna smack his teeth down the throat!
blackdog~ 0 Posted March 1, 2003 I've tried it myself and searched for MDL>3DS or other format convertors online but had no luck. You are not the first to think of this.

Model of flight is unrealistic, plane controll is unrealistic, plane systems are unrealistic, etc, etc, etc... Examples: - 2-degrees flap controll - neither realistic MFD's nor HUD's - no realistic airbrake - airbrake weilded with thrust controll - simplified controll of arnament - no realistic chaff/flares - no realistic missile-firing system nor accurate guidance engine - poor catapultation - unrealistic radar behaviour - no afterburners - lack of take-off and landing procedures (chat with controll tower) - unrealistic parameters (range, speed, etc...) - plane bumps after crashing - and lot of more examples... pzvg 0 Posted March 2, 2003 a physics model that does not account drag, nor inertia byond a static value, no OFP is good at what it is supposed to be good at, But it's a lousy flight sim.
jotte 0 Posted March 2, 2003 There was some plug-in to convert MS FS series mdl SOURCEFILS into 3DS that I came into contact via IL-2 some year or so back. The "problem" was that you have to have the sourcefiles, not just the files used ingame in MSFS.
Wonder 0 Posted March 2, 2003 I never said that OFP could qualify as a flight simulator, or that OFP is realistic enough to be a flight simulator. What i meant was that OFP is a military simulator and military planes are military equipment, and thus should be modeled as close to life as the game engine allows. It's just that many people think this is a waste of time and these same people hit me with this "OFP is not a flight sim"
pzvg 0 Posted March 2, 2003 OFP works well for rotary-wing, and can handle propjobs with a few niggles. Jet to jet is where the game falls flat, engagement ranges are too close for jet combat, and the AI failed flight school without exception <really, when did you last see the AI use BFM?> I did not, however, tell you what you should or should not make, your game, your time, your project. <and I'll probably download and try it, even if I don't care for it, I'm fairminded>
peanuckle_00 0 Posted March 2, 2003 I say let the conversions begin. Make an ofp-jets page and host all the air power downloads. Just for the record operation flashpoint is abbreviated as OFP good fellow. Edit: Edited grammar.
Shashman 0 Posted March 2, 2003 come on guys...this ain't the subject of the thread..And Too Tall you could have illustrated your point with a pic of a plane that actually DOES have afterburner instead of using the A-4 which doesn't Would be really cool to have FS2k2 aircraft in OFP but I don't know anything bout models and all that 3d stuff so I won't say anything else
~Too Tall~ 0 Posted March 2, 2003 well right now the A4 is the only one in game that has an afterburner to show my point
