How do I capture Debug Information?

I know that allowing the writing to a file in a game can be an incredibly dangerous security risk but what is the best way to capture debug information? A mission I am working on is quite far along and is really fun to play when all goes well but there are times when anomalous behavior pops up and without debug information I can't really track down the reason.
