Balschoiw 0 Posted November 21, 2002 Would have made a good smokescreen all over europe. Spanish authorities did not act quite good at this crises. The best would have been to tow the tanker immedeatly into a harbour and pump out the oil. The struggel to put it onto open sea caused a. The ship to break apart b. a longterm polution of sea bed and organisms living there The harm that has been done to environment is not measurable at the moment. Whales come along that route and microscopic organisms are killed at the moment. Plankton is the major food for a lot of sea creatures and the oil kills it. If you check the amount of 70000 tons of oils that are leaking right now you can see that noone can estimate the damage done. Instead of arguing with Brits and arresting the Greek captain of the ship, who tried to get his ship near the cost to have it pumped empty they should have done more to prevent the big catastrophy that now happens. It´s only half the truth that oil clumps when in deep sea with low temperature. Deep sea creatures and microbiotic organisms that are a major food for fish and other creatures are polluted and killed. So this will have major effects on nature in any way. Besides the seabirds killed and beaches polluted off course.

What we should do is do the best we can to clean this up, then find out what went wrong and fix it before it happens again. The cleanup process would be immense. I've heard there are chemicals that eat up oil and stuff, but I don't know if there are any sideffects or anything.
Mister Frag 0 Posted November 22, 2002 Yes, there are chemicals that could be sprayed on the slick to help it break up. Unfortunately, that would also affect the oils that sea birds use to waterproof themselves -- they would probably drown or die from hypothermia.

I don't believe there are major side effects to the oil eating ones.

It was registered in a mambo jumbo country that doesnt take security of tankers that serious. By now round 3000 of these outdated tankers are cruising the seas, so the possibillity of an oil pest is present for all coasts. BTW it didnt take long that the spanish defence minister suspected Al Quaida for the incident. Isnt this sweet ?
