Helo Gun Turret Default Direction

Trying to rotate a helo door gun turret physically in the p3d model (not using the turret config entry). When I do the "viewgunner, muzzle" memory points do not align properly with the model. The other points (rotation axis's, etc) do just fine as the gun animates correctly. 

 

My question is why? Why must helo door gun turrets face forward by default? Is there a way around this? I have asked many known modders/groups on these forums with little response

All turrets must face forward in the model by default. It's not an issue unique to helicopters

 

Presumably simulation is done relative to the vehicle's heading
