Generic mod licence

Recommended Posts

I don't know exactly where to post this question, so feel free to move it in the right category.

I was wondering if there is a "generic" status governing mods sharing and editing when the author of the original addon didn't included any direction or link to a licence file in his post ?

The question is, there is several mods that we would like to USE (not modify, only use) and be able to redistribute within our modpack and PBO-synchonizer, and for which there is no direction allowing or prohibiting this. That's mainly because the author didn't think about licencing stuff... What I always do (even if the licence allow us to redistribute) is that I contact the original author to tell him about our project, ask for his permission, and ensure him that we will credit him by multiple ways, not taking ownership of his work. But sometimes the author is unreachable.

For sure, modifying a mod when its author is not responding is not a right behaviour. We do not do that. But what about redistributing ? Maybe any mod published by the community without any concern of licencing fall under Bohemia Interactive's licence APL-SA (Arma Public Licence - Share Alike) ? If yes, it allows sharing and redistributing the mod or part of it, with crediting the original author, and without any modification (reworking the content of a PBO), only for ArmA, in a non-profit activity, which is our case.

What do you think about it ? What should I do ? We don't want to do anything wrong, we only want to play with quality stuff whose author is no more responding and whose licence is not given.

1. if there is no license, the normal behavior is to assume the worst one is in place - similar to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/

2. as long as the place you use to host your modpack does not require via TOS to share your IP with the host, there should be no issue - one place you cannot upload content you don't own is Steam Workshop though simply because of its own Terms of Service

My behaviour when there is no license:

"As free as air"

"As free as possible"

"Put your desired behaviour here"

So rehosting on our private box with no data collecting in any way, plus credits and link to the original mod, should be perfectly compatible with this. Good !
