looping193 10 Posted June 26, 2016 Hello, Is there any way to make a custom modpack containing things from other mod. Simple exemple, if i want to make mission with my friend where there's a BTR-70 coming from RHS 3gigs mod and let's say an other mod like "advance climbing". is it possible to take juste a vehicle and make my own folder pack @LitePack or do my own exe to facilitate things. And is it possible to make this for a public server ? With of course writing to who goes the credits to. (I think i saw one time sa-matra's wasteland made with a custom RHS modpack lightweight with vehicle coming from RHS). I think it's one of the major problem of arma's mod, there's fantastic mods out there but most of mutiplayer server aren't populated (other than life servers) as much as vanila servers because we to download gigs and gigs of mod where like 90% won't be used. Bonus question: if i use a light mod on a server (less that 1mb) which is available on the workshop for exemple, can we upload it directly to the client ? PuFu 4600 Posted June 26, 2016 it depends on the license most of the time: for instance, where RHS is concerned 1. deleting some p3ds out locally from your own download/installation location it is up to you of course, but do expect issues. (i can only comment on RHS here as previously said, where things are tied together in different p3ds, so deleting some is guaranteed to break something, this is not just a collection of 3d models) 2. redistributing only parts of RHS is NOT allowed in according with the EULA 3. pulling out individual p3d files, repacking and redistributing them is even worse, and you'll most likely (at least where RHS is concerned), at the very least end up with a Cease & Desists, and the very worse a lawsuit. 4. any upload of ANY mod you have no ownership over is against Steam Subscriber Agreement, (and where RHS is concerned, explicitly forbiden by the EULA) TL;DR: do seek permission before you mess with other people's files and always read licenses
looping193 10 Posted June 26, 2016 Ok that's pretty clear, and it feels sad and stupid (sorry i can't find any other words) to make people download free content entirely where only a few of them will be used. But i can totaly understant the fact that they want to prevent people from taking credit for things that they didn't made (like i heard about sa-matra and wasteland). Those content could be much more used if this was possible.
PuFu 4600 Posted June 27, 2016 Ok that's pretty clear, and it feels sad and stupid (sorry i can't find any other words) to make people download free content entirely where only a few of them will be used. No one forces people to download anything, people do it voluntarily. Don't wanna download RHS because it is 3GB big, you can easily choose not to. But because it is optional and free doesn't mean it doesn't have a license, or that the tens of thousands of hours put into it are worth dicking with. But i can totaly understant the fact that they want to prevent people from taking credit for things that they didn't made (like i heard about sa-matra and wasteland). Those content could be much more used if this was possible It is about people taking credit, monetizing it, ripping parts and modifying it and so on and so forth. Again, some other groups might be a lot more forgiving about it, and might have different licenses, RHS is pretty strict and i am the one who enforce the license...So far i have hundreds of DMCA and C&D put into effect. In any case, do read licenses, do contact authors and ask for permissions. If the answer is no, then think about making your own mod, from scratch.
war_lord 934 Posted June 27, 2016 Plus, modders have no reason to want to give up on personal rights to distribute something more widely. It's a free download, if you can't be arsed downloading it, that's not their concern, they're not losing out. If you're annoyed at mods not being on steam you should be angry at A. Steam, for trying to force users into a blatantly controlling EULA that gives rights to all their content to valve and B. Steam workshop for having such a toxic community.
