I am new to modeling.

Recommended Posts

Alright,

So it has been around two months now since I have begun modeling, at first I wanted to make a game, then it went back and fourth between that and making buildings for Arma 3. Eventually I gave up on both and decided to just model something, so I came up with this i.imgur.com/fftMPAC.png and I'm not sure if it's good or bad, however some input on improvements would be nice and or maybe a few headers on what to do next or add to this. As long as the feedback is constructive I will take it deeply into consideration.

Thanks to all,

Trooper

It looks fine for what it is... if you're trying to get it into Arma though, what difficulty did you face that made you to decide "to just model something"?

Well I sort of typed that wrong, I should have said it more along the lines of I wanted to get way too in depth way too fast. So I have decided to model this, and now I am in search of where I should go next, or whatever various steps I should take to progress further. I have watched a video on youtube however I would like any feedback/help from the community before moving on.

This is not a bad step, actually. If you're not planning to texture it further before trying it out in-game, you can consult modding tutorials such as Brsseb's (mirrored over at PMC Editing Wiki)* and ARMSCor's old Blender-to-game helicopter tutorial for how to get something in-game at all, albeit renaming Oxygen/O2 to Object Builder and BinPBO to Addon Builder as these tutorials preceded the release of the Arma 3 Tools. (If using Blender there is a Toolbox for aiding your modeling for Arma, and for 3DS Max there is a years-old toolbox/workflow, though I couldn't tell you anything more re: that side of things.)

As a broad piece of advice no matter which workflow you use for modeling: if you decide to do a public release for buildings, try to implement multiple resolution levels of detail (LOD) or else in-game performance will take a hit.

* Unless Mondkalb's Addon Tutorial is recreated without image links broken I cannot recommend it, as useful as it may have been in the past.

I really appreciate the help, I have been able to get my object into the game, and it looks fine and everything. I just need to follow your links to tutorials so I can understand how to add a skeleton and make it so doors are openable and what not.

for making object animations you need a model.cfg. How to model.cfg This should give you an idea what it is for. Then check the model.cfg and p3d of the house sample provided with the A3 tools (maybe it's seperate download now, havent checked)

It is indeed part of a separate download as the Arma 3 Samples.

Honestly there are more than enough scriptures and not enough guys creating building objects. I would just publish the files and see if other guys want to team

Up with you and help release them as building objects

I don't want to say it's been set into stone however I will be talking to the project lead of the DreamRebel Project, i think you're absolutely correct in what you said, however it would be nice to be able to script then on my own after sometime aswell.
