Showing several LODs at once in object builder?

Recommended Posts

As per the title really. Is there any way to show several LODs in the object builder viewports at once?? so say you can display the pilot LOD whilst working in the memory LOD, it would make place points far far far far far far far easier.

AFAIK you can only view whatever is in your top LOD (Checkbox for it is under File\Options...\View Background LOD). It'll show a yellow wireframe for whatever model is in the LOD at the top of the LODs list. So perhaps just make a 0.000 temporary LOD that you can Cut and Paste whatever LOD you need to use as a reference while you're modelling, then when you've finished delete the 0.000 LOD or rename all the resolution LODs to have the numbers you originally planned for them to have.

There are alternatives for using LODs to place memory points though, other than just looking at the yellow trace:

You could always place the pin where you want it in the pilot LOD (move pin tool in the toolbar, or use [C] to snap the pin to the centre of come currently selected faces/vertices) then if you go in to your memory LOD, activate the pin [Shift+C] and press [Insert] it will place a memory point in the exact place where the pin is located.

The pin remains in position across all LODs and viewports rgardless of which one you select, so it's a universal frame of reference. And you can snap things to it by using the Scale Points tools and putting a value of zero in the X/Y/Z scale fields (the "Relative to pin" box should automatically check when you activate the pin with [Shift+C], and go off when you deactivate it).

You can also just place verts in the Pilot or resolution LODs themselves and cut & paste them to the Memory LOD when you want them.

Just to add onto what da12thMonkey has already said: the pin tool is quite valuable if/when you do any animations and need to preview if an axis is in the correct place. You can rotate vertices/points, using the pin as your axis. Very handy for previewing and acquiring info on how many degrees a selection needs to rotate by in order to look good. This info can then be integrated into your model.cfg.
