EDcase 87 Posted December 15, 2014 Just wondering if its just me but I feel that helicopters retain too much lift with forward flight and no power (collective) In other words its VERY hard to bleed off speed when in forward flight even with no power. Only when air speed is below about 50 does the helicopter descend very fast. This is a problem of simplifying real flight controls in a game because the real collective has separate throttle and pitch adjustments. I would like to get other AFM users opinions to see if its worth making a bug tracker ticket asking to make collective affect the lift a bit more. (So that zero power also reduces rotor pitch to make heli descend faster) Thoughts...?
CaptainAzimuth 714 Posted December 15, 2014 Firstly, there's a thread in Dev Branch for this, secondly, idk about that, the helicopters feel great, don't get me wrong, I'm not real pilot. But when I fly, the helicopters feel real, in a sense, and as apposed for stopping really fast, I decrease cyclic, and when it starts going down I flare gradually according to how much it's going downwards, until I come to a stop, increasing cyclic to prevent from dropping like a rock. If i want to stop completely, I cut all throttle, pull a flip, and increase to medium before I drop like a rock.
Healbeam 10 Posted December 15, 2014 Just wondering if its just me but I feel that helicopters retain too much lift with forward flight and no power (collective)In other words its VERY hard to bleed off speed when in forward flight even with no power. Only when air speed is below about 50 does the helicopter descend very fast. That's realistic, and how it's supposed to be. When flying faster than about ~20 knots, you are in ETL (effective translational lift). This means that you can fly forward with fairly little collective, as opposed to hovering which requrires quite a bit of collective. Even when autorotating (flying without any power), you can still glide quite a bit before setting down. You can not currently manipulate the throttle in the AFM, only the collective pitch. Even though you can modify the throttle in real life, pilots usually do not touch it mid-flight, unless an emergency occurs. If you need to turn off your engine to descent faster, you planned your approach wrong.
EDcase 87 Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) Thanks for feedback. DarkSide.. I'm not talking about Dev branch so I can't put it there. Healbeam: Yes, I know about ETL (I have flown a Robinson R22) It just seems a bit too effective. When travelling at above 50 knots (can't remember exact speed) even small adjustments from collective still had quite a big influence on lift. To me reducing collective should have a bit more effect on lift or ETL is too strong. Edited December 15, 2014 by EDcase
Healbeam 10 Posted December 15, 2014 Ah, I see. Still, I think modifying the throttle to get the desired change in lift is a dirty solution.
pipyn1970 19 Posted January 5, 2015 Hi guys Could someone please give me some tips. I'm using the AFM with a new X-55 Rhino. Im new to the HOTAS. The tips i need are how to land. Im trying to use the info within the ghosthawk & not the screen icons. This is how i try to do things: 1) Fly as low as i can until im about 1.5ks out 2) Then slowly start to bleed off speed by pitching up no more than 10 degrees 3) Within about 2oo meters i bleed more speed so i try to be about 20 knots (in the yellow zone as i cant make it out for sure). I also keep an eye on my collective making sure im not to low or to high. 4) Meters from the LZ i try to slowly lower my collective & bleed off more speed but this is where things get ugly........ This is what happens... I crash or damage the ghosthawk always. I just cant seem to find the sweet spot of decent even thou im about a max of 10 meters from the ground when i try to land. when im on the ground my collective is all the way forward. I've tried it with my wheel brake on & off & i still end up hurt. I've been at this for over a wk now but am getting know where. If anyone has this HOTAS could you make a vid of how im ment to land without killing everyone please? I aint even tried combat landings yet. Thanks in advance for any help folks
