Missiles

Recommended Posts

isnt true that all projectiles spin when they're fired? well the Arma 3 missiles, whether it be MLRS, RPG, or any other missile, they just dont spin. Plus the afterburner is divided into planes and looks very unreal. I think Bohemia needs to work on this. What do you think? i'll add pictures later to show.

First off, no planes in Arma 3 have afterburners. Just look at the construction of the engine. If you're using a modded aircraft that has afterburners, this is on the developer of the mod's end. He is the one that designs the flame effects from the burners.

Projectiles from rifles always spin, this is true. However, most others don't.

For example, the M1A1 Abrams tank uses a smoothbore cannon, as are many other large-bore tank guns. This is because HEAT rounds lose effectiveness if they impact while spinning. This is why APFSDS-T rounds have fins, they need some means of stabilization and need to generate a little spin of their own. Watch the first clip of

video.

Most guided missiles do not spin at all. This is because they need to correct their flight path, and if your fins are always spinning, the direction you will turn towards will be spinning too. Also, having said fins means that any sort of spin would slow down quickly due to drag.

Some unguided rockets do spin, such as Hydra 70 (the generic 2.75" rockets fired from helicopters and jets) rockets. Because they move at extremely fast speeds - sometimes faster than the speed of sound if launched from fast moving aircraft - they can use their slightly bent fins to generate spin for added accuracy. Because the typical engagement envelope for M151 70mm Hydras is as far as 2 nautical miles (3.7km), this spin is needed to achieve effective accuracy.

RPGs do not need this spin because their maximum range is much less and accuracy is not as important.

Most Russian ATGMs tend to spin in flight. But we don't have any of those in the game.
