Killing with the never ending threat of you or your buddies being killed is not 'fascinating' at all. You might think that you are an important individual. Sam Samson 0 Posted September 22, 2002 I really don't think there's anything wrong with the army or military service. As long as I get to pick the generals...

I assure you after the 100th time you have to clean your weapon you don't want to fire it but use it as a rectal probe on your drill instructor

My dad was drafted into the Army during Vietnam, and went airborne, which was lucky because he only spent about a month in Nam during '72 (that was the 82nd's only deployment in SE Asia). I like the idea of jumping out of airplanes and all that airborne duty entails, but I dont think my brain could handle using 'hooah' as a primary form of communication for several years lol. Aside from that, the Marine Corps is also attractive to me. First into the fight, and a serious challenge of my physical and psychological limitations. That and the picture of the flag-raising on Mt. Suribachi. I dont usually go in for propaganda, but that picture is special, and those are (almost) all Marines in the photo.

Guest Posted September 23, 2002 I don't really consider my time in Kosovo as military service since I wasn't there as a grunt (but I was under military command). I think that the normal peace keeping duties are very boring. I know also however that my friends that were with SweBat had a great time - they had very soft duties, lots of free time, good pay and many things to do (chasing girls, drinking etc ). Without my prior military service I would have never gotten the opportunity to go to Kosovo, so military service was worth it out of that respect. I got the opportunity some months ago to go down to Afghanistan, but I declined. I have some friends that are down there now (they have also been in Kosovo) and they say that it isn't worth it in any way. In Kosovo you could get anything like food and drink (Cars, steros and weapons too, if you are into that kind of thing ) and you have a pretty decend quality of life. Apparantly you can't get anything in Afghanistan - everybody lives of MREs and there is nothing at all to do there in your free time.

Tyler EDIT: what did your dad do?<span id='postcolor'> My Dad was an officer in the Air Force in the 60s and 70s and 80s. He started out as a navigator on cargo planes like C-123s and went to Panama and stuff. Then he got into special operations with AC-130s and later commanded the Spectre unit out of Hurburt Field. Did at least 2 tours in Vietnam, and had operations in the Congo. He retired as Lt. Col. Before he was in the airforce he was in the Gaurd for a a couple years too. He loved his time in the Air Force and does not share the opinion here of "I would never do it again" He talks all the time about wishing they would let him back. He's 64. Now me, I want to be a combat controller in the Air Force. This is something I definately want to do and hopefully make a career out of. I cannot see myself doing anything else. (Well maybe flying but...) And a few opinions from Europeans on the internet is not going to change my mind.

I know that my opinion on the military is much more positive now then when I was in it. I'm sure that by the time I'll be 64 I'll be telling everybody how good it was in the military As for "a few Europeans" - well, since most Europeans do military service, you should listen to us. We have done it fairly recently so we can give you a more objective picture of what it is like

We have done it fairly recently so we can give you a more objective picture of what it is like <span id='postcolor'> I don't know, maybe it is a question of attitude. If you're the sort of guy to sing the national anthem every morning, you might actually like it in the army, since you can always comfort yourself that you're serving the rodina and all that duty bollocks. But if you're the kind of non-nationalistic guy that likes to mostly watch after his own interests (like me), then the army seems a little pointless. It's too altruistic to die for your country, since when you're dead, what the hell do you do with the country? Nope, I might die for a patch of land that I own, but not for the homes of people that I do not even know. I knew guys in the army who just loved all that parade shit and patriotism crap that they tried to cram down our throats. I think they loved it in the army.
