Question to Russians here about paint scheme of Militia cars

Recommended Posts

could you explain me paint scheme of Militia cars in Soviet time:

- i seen blue with red stripe but only on old cars in 40s/50s, but to my surprise i found VAZ 2101 with such paint scheme, and VAZ 2101 is definetly not from 1950,

- i seen yellow with blue stripe, but mostly with GAI marking, majority of google result "Soviet Militia" show GAI car models,

- i seen white with blue stripe but mostly "Russia" not "USSR",

i know what is GAI (traffic, highway) and what is DPS (patrol)

what should be paint scheme of Militia car for "1985" ? i seen no articles on Wikipedia

thanx in advance

DPS - means "дорожно-поÑÑ‚Ð¾Ð²Ð°Ñ Ñлужба", traffic service, post-soviet GAI equivalent name. From what I remember from my childhood - paintscheme in late 80's was yellow or orange hull with dark blue or dark violet stripes and letters, both at regular Militia cars and GAI ones. Some of UAZ-469s were painted with tan or olive green with dark blue or violet stripes. After 1991 until aprox. 2000 main hull color of VAZ or GAZ cars was white with blue stripes.

aa so DPS is Russian GAI and GAI was only in USSR ?

so regular Militia car (patrol, prevention) is just simply without letter GAI (USSR), DPS (Russia) ?

in PL we had in past <R> on such cars, small symbol, so it was not to notice, difference was in color of cap (white for traffic, blue for rest)

so if i will make for P85 yellow with blue Volga it will be regular unit and proper ?

and dark blue VAZ 2101 photo i seen was misleading ?

white-blue is Russia not USSR?

Exactly. GAI was USSR name and now it is used informally, official one is DPS (introduced around 1995 if I'm not mistaken).

In USSR both regular and road branches of militia used the same color scheme, the difference was only in GAI letters. And dark blue hull main color was sometimes used but with lighter blue stripes and it was used in last year of USSR existence together with white and silver/grey hull colors (nobody cared much about paint schemes in those days). Dark blue with red stripe was used until 60's and VAZ with such scheme may be of civil origin, just painted with old scheme. Some old VAZ and Volga cars are painted with USSR militia scheme just for fun by private owners.
