Connecting to server causes loss of internet connection

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

Sorry if this thread has been created before - I have searched around, but cannot seem to find a solution that works.

When I connect to any multiplayer server, whether via playWithSix, in-game browser, or command line parameter, I immediately lose connection to the internet. It appears local network is still fine (although not consistently so), mostly internet. All other devices on the local network still have an internet connection. Therefore, I think it is a problem with my router. However, this ONLY happens with Arma 3. I have tried disabling my firewall and anti-virus, to no avail.

The router I have is a Netgear WNDR3400.

The computer is connected over Wifi.

On the router, TCP and UDP ports 2302-2305 are forwarded to the correct IP address for the computer.

The firewall and antivirus on the computer is turned off (antivirus is Symantec Endpoint Protection). Oddly enough, when it IS on, I sporadically get the message that network traffic from svchost.exe was blocked. Don't know what service that could be...might be totally unrelated.

There appears to be no firewall options on the router, although I have disabled Port Scan and DoS protection (seems to be the solution for everyone else who has had this problem before, but not for me...).

NAT is open.

UPnP is on.

If there is any other information I have missed, I will be happy to provide it.

Thank you very much to anyone who knows what could possibly be going on...Arma 3 is a great game and I'd love to be able to play some multiplayer soon!

Cheers,

aspyrx

My guess is it is either the wifi or your router itself - have you tried updating any firmware for your particular router? Also a good test would be to plug your PC directly into the router with ethernet cable - this will rule out the wifi as being the problem.

svchost.exe - good description here:

Put an fixed IP on your computer and see how it works!

When working on a wifi network and our ip is assigned by DHCP is normal to have loss of connection with the internet (on on-line games) and the problem is too high pings, but the wifi connection itself continues to operate.

I played a few years via wi-fi and had sporadically breaks the connection with the server and found that i had 2000-3000ms pings that caused the broken link with the internet but not the wi-fi network.

To test this open the command line and write: ping -n 50 YOUR_ROUTER_IP

If my teory is correct it's going to start ok, and out of nowere you will get packets with an huge ping.

I solved by giving my computer an fixed IP.

Thank you very much for your responses, I will try them out and see what happens. Unfortunately the router is physically too far away from the computer (separated by a floor), and I can't move it, but it didn't occur to me to give it a fixed IP.

EDIT: also, the router appears to be on the latest firmware version.

Alright, assigning a static IP worked just fine. Thanks very much!
