Local Dedicated server setup?

Recommended Posts

My understanding is that I can use the Arma3server.exe to set up a server on my PC, which I and others can then connect to.

I cannot for the life of me follow the stuff in http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?147537-Tutorial-How-to-run-ArmA3-on-a-dedicated-server . Most of that seems to be directed rightly enough at someone who's paid for a hosted server. I don't even have a D drive, I don't see "administrator", I just can't make sense of it.

Can someone please either point me to a thread which explains in simple terms how to set up a server on a local machine, OR just tell me. I can't believe it's as complicated as installing steam updaters and all the rest. I mean I have all that stuff already to play Arma in the first place.

Thanks

That tutorial is for a dedicated server.

Depending on how many playrs you are catering for, it might be better to just host a game using your client

That's really not that helpful. I need a dedicated server for Alive to work properly when the persistency module is released. I think I may have it working though.

  • basically copy your client install to anywhere else
  • create a desktop shortcut of the arma3server.exe that resides in that "anywhere else" location
  • add command line entries to the target line in that desktop shortcut/properties window
  • Define non default ports for that install via the command line and for the steam ports the .cfg file
  • define a profile that points to the "anywhere else" location
  • launch the server via the desktop shortcut

apart from that the dedi tutorial should fulfill all other requirements

Your server does not require steam to be online.

You can update your server by copying the client install over when that gets updated.

well if you have a client installed in folder "A" you don't really want the server to be running from folder "A".

This will likely cause conflicts with access permissions to files. The exe's lock some files when they are running

If that is what you are currently doing, then you are the first to have ever tried it afaik

If you have limited space you could download and install the dedicated server package. It is stripped of all non essential content, eg textures, sounds etc as they are not needed on a dedi
