Brigades, divisons, regiments... what's all that r

Recommended Posts

Now, I know that the exact figures may vary depending what nation is being referrenced, but I would really like some information that would apply (at least) in general "across-the-board".  Basically, I want to know is, how big is a Division? a Regiment? a Battalion? a Company? an Army?, etc. (I know there are more).  Also, how are they structured?  For example (and I'm just making this up) there are 4 regiments in a battalion, 2 battalions in a division, 4 divisions in an Army, etc.  This is something that has always eluded me, and an answer would shine a lot of light on an otherwise dim understanding.

Again, I know that the size and content may potentially vary by nation (i.e. British Divisions may be larger than those of the Soviets, U.S. battalions are typically larger than those of Finnland, etc), so if I could get feedback from persons of different countries with their respective info, that would help much more!

Ok, what about "unit"? Is that just like a general term describing some sort of combat element, or is it refering to something specific?

Yes, it describes some sort of element, or yes, it describes something more specific?
