Why do we have CPU heavy games when GPUs are much more powerful?

Arma 4? I'm sorry to dissapoint you but keep your expectations low. What I hope for is another company entering the scene creating games like Arma but with better engine. Maybe then BIS will realise that this is not a monopoly and the may do more to keep their throne and their customers.

that would be an ideal outcome, but i doubt it. you can't make gta/call of dudebros/battlefield level money in this niche genre, so big companies aren't going to bother, and small companies can't compete with already established brands. we can hope for indie studios, but sandbox milsim is in fact a huge undertaking.

it's frustrating yes, but realistically, i don't forsee arma 4 having any real competition. as always.

Mantle will do nothing if performance is limited by the AI and battle simulation, which causes the worst performance drops. Will only allow for greater viewdistance or detail, waste of resources imo, especially with only a fraction of players having a compatible gpu.

Don't take it the wrong way, but your attitude is far to spread across this forum. 1 or 2 men for 2 months is to much for Bohemia, REALLY, for the performance you gain back and all the support across the games that are using this engine?

You don't need to do EXACTLY the same thing, but as engines will get stronger and complex, this will be attacked sooner or later by someone also.

That's a bit optimistic I think, battlefield 4's mantle was supposed to be live in december. I don't know how much day z and arma differ, probably not that much, but it'd make much more sense to do dayz first, as more people play it and they were moving toward a model where only things close to the player would be calculated locally, so the battle simulation and ai wouldn't bottleneck performance as bad.

Not optimistic at all. The guy from Oxide put mantle in their engine, by himself only, in 2 months without to much "how to do it". New, very complex engine in D3D that is, 1 man, 2 months. If that's much for a company like bohemia, then we've got nothing to talk about. It would be silly.

i sincerely hope for some oculus impact on the fps industry in the next years. oculus devs recommend "realistic" movement speeds to counter motion sickness and this might lead to some more realistic games approach. add the case of a huge map and good moddability and you might have a competitor :P
