Hi guys so heres my situation, i wanted to create a Stratis or Altis life server for myself and friends to play on as all the current servers are in us or uk and being australian doesnt really allow us to play be it ping or just the amount of players filling each server. So i thought ok i'll hire a server with my mates and create our own server using the same mission files.

This is when i found out these people are attempting to make some sort of monopoly on these files and not allowing anyone to use them but their own servers. I understand several people may be putting weeks/months work of work into these files and i can appreciate that. But not allowing anyone else to use them at all is pathetic. Fine dont let people use all the brand new files/scripts with all the good shit, but atleast let people use some old content that way people get the fun outta the missions and you can keep your servers more attractive being that you've got the most advanced versions.

I mean cmon we all play online to have fun but to say no you cant play my files (which isnt entirely theres since they're using old or other peoples scripts with theres added on) because i work hard. Well good for you but what about people like myself and i know alot of people like me who dont want to make money, dont care if its not the new best versions, we just want to play the dam game and have fun but the greed of these people wanting to i dunno make money or whatever is ruining this, and im pretty dam pissed off these people are causing this situation and probably ruin the whole life servers. Im not surprised these people servers are getting DDOS attacked.

All i ask is can someone help us out, im not willing to go learn scripting to be honest i've got a life and i dont intend on wasting it attempting to learn scripting. I just want to host a server with life like any other map. This is a bit of a rant but yeah, does anyone know anyone that can help me out and let me and my mates host a life server. Or do i just give in and go play another game.

Ok your attitude is terrible and i am not enjoying it one bit. People willl be able to play on our servers except they have to apply this way we can have good RP like city life. The people that are creating this created stratis life and the files got used and so they did not have a dev team anymore. You want to complain go ahead but i am keeping your name in mind and quite frankly you ask for our files again this way calling us pathetic you will be blacklisted from our site and server. Well then, your response was completely unnecessary as he isn't even referring to any of the work by the people you believe are behind it but OK. I like the title you have, PR.. It seems you are perfect for the job, you should probably do your research a bit more and not look like a child, as PR that was quite unprofessional.

As for Tooks, the way in which you expressed yourself was a bit over the top but I could understand some frustration you may be feeling and for that I will explain the reasoning why I have not released it and you may or may not understand them.

1. I was a bit offended at your statement saying it's being turned into a monopoly with the mission and server-side files. As the person who wrote the code I have never made a profit off it of it and in fact I take in absolutely no money from the people hosting the mission. Seal Team Sloth (STS) the server in which I do primary coding for doesn't pay me a penny. They take in donations of course but that is to support their server costs as to any community has the right to do. Saying that it's being turned into a monopoly is rather quite hurtful however I cannot say the same for other servers but I presume they to follow the same basic idea. I've personally been offered money and I have turned all of them down.

2. Yes we all play online to have fun but in these types of situations when you create something that is popular people don't respect the original content makers wishes and trample over the work and remove credits and all sorts of things. I have regretted every day since I released Wasteland and I do not want one of those releases ever again. Too many people fight over these kinds of things and servers them selves fight amongst each other and it's been like that forever in the 'RP' Community of ARMA and it will never really change. I would love to share everything I can with the community but I don't want to see my work as a mission / game mode be trampled over. I built it the way that I like it and that's how I want to keep it till I decide to change it. I want people to play the game mode a way that I envisioned it and every mission maker / designer is entitled to that and that is why the ARMA community is strong and why there is much variety in missions but there are people out there that don't respect any of that and they may say that they do but they really don't. Is it wrong for me to feel this way? Probably but that is how I feel with stuff like this. If I wish to keep it on one or a few servers then as the person that coded it I should have the right to it whether people respect it or not unless told other wise by a BIS representative and in which at that point I'd just leave and it'd never get released.

3. Even if I was to 'release it' the things involved to make it run are a bit complicated for most people and only some what experienced server managers would be able to really do it or at least someone that tries really hard. It's not as simple to load up and play it as it does involve some bit of work to be done. I'm not much of one to explain things to people unless they have some what of a understanding as to what I am talking about. I become rather annoyed by stupid questions or people not willing to actually do their research, it drives me absolutely nuts as I learned everything that I know on my own and I sort of despise people that want everything spoon fed to them... That might of been a harsh way of saying that and I apologize but that is how I feel about technical things.

That basically is a brief summary of why it's locked away to a few servers and how I feel. I won't bother to explain things deeper as I don't want to ramble on and on and would much rather keep it as brief as possible. Maybe you'll understand the reasoning and maybe you won't. Hell I don't even know if you'll even read this.

Couldn't you just decompile the addons .pbo files? but then again you can't get access to @a3life_server

That is certainly possible but besides being heavily frowned upon by the community and possibly in several violations by itself.

If you are able to reverse engineer the server files(mostly sql functions and event handlers) you might as well built your own mission rather then stealing it.

We'd love to do a A3 life server and give you full credits and donate back to the work that's gone in it tonic you've done some amazing work. I only recently just checked out some of the a3 life files that seem to be floating around in the community and its sad to hear the story of what actually happened. I am a big person on protecting ip .I had a lot of work taken from myself when l was producing a program that went to pay tv and its pretty heartbreaking the amount or time, energy and dedication it takes to make a good project so people can enjoy and have someone exploit all that hard work and even make money on it themselves l find it pretty poor on their behalf. I hope this doesn't deter you away from the arma 3 communities there are a lot of good ones out there and a lot of good coders and textures devs ect out there still wanting to make good projects and a lot could be learnt from the lesson. Sorry man that you and your team went through what ya did l full sympathise with what happened to you. I have been there before. I hope we all still get to enjoy some of your work on arma 3 in the future man.
