Reminds me of the episode of Red Dwarf where Rimmer asks them to call him by his old school name, Ace. Lister wryly replies 'No one ever called you Ace! Maybe Ace-hole!'

I voted for the Marines because they are generally the 'beachead' guys who get a lot of thankless tasks.

What about at Normandy? That was the Army who inavded Frances, for the most part.

I thought Marines and the Army were in on Normandy? Besides, it was the Marines who mainly fought the war in the Pacific.

Well did the army not fight most of the war in Europe? I guess mariens are all right, but they just are a dull branch of the miliatry to me.

Army + Marines fought in Europe. It was almost entirely the Marines that fought in the Pacific. How are they a dull branch?

Enlighten me on the Marines fighting in Eurpoe... Maybe in WWI but certainly not in WWII. Their involvement may have been limited to auxilary roles but I doubt they fought as infantry units. (although all Marines are Infantrymen (and women)

Army has got to be my favorite. No one has as much kick ass stuff rolled into one big ball of love.

Army:

Are

Not

Ready

to be

Marines

Yet. biggrin.gif

Airforce bombs random things and claims it was shooting at them, Marines shoot people and do the real work, Army whines about the Marines since they took over their job and do it better, Navy gets the Marines to places and shoots Tomahawks at random buildings deemed terrorist. So it all works out. tounge.gif

Basically, the Marines go where the fights go. They may not have had a very big role in Europe, but they did almost all the work in the Pacific. Are you failing to see that?

What does the Army have that the Marines dont?

I'd like an American to explain to me the benefit of the Marine Corps being a seperate branch of the military.

well the thing is that from what i have heard, there is no benefit, if you wana go to the service to make a carreer and learn things for future jobs the army, airforce and the navy are ware to go. the marines don't pamper you there, the are strickly down to business. if you wana got to a certian college in a certian state, they will put you some other place that somebody else wanted to go there, while some other guy gets to go to your selected college. though thats just what im hearing, though i wouldn't doubt it. i onced worked w/ a cheff when i was working in a resteruant and he told me he only stayed in the marines for 4 years cuzz he hated it so much, he wanted to leave sooner but the rules are once you finish training your ass belongs to them until after 4 years.

The Mariens are just the Navy's ground force. tounge.gif Army has to be coolest branch next to Airforce, nothing can compare to the B-52. biggrin.gif

To paraphrase "Brute" Krulak: The American people don't NEED a Marine Corps, but they WANT one.

We're self-contained. Our forward-deployed MEU(SOC)s can deploy anywhere in the world and conduct combined arms operations for up to 30 days without re-supply. In a nutshell, we're the door-kickers, paving the way for the Army to come in with their more powerful (but slower) assets.

I prefer the Army in the way of Special Forces like the Delta or any of the Special Operations. Divisions like 101st Air Assult(why isn't Airborne anymore?! ), 82nd Airborne, and any of the Special Forces Divisions are extreamly useful in modern conflicts. But I will always love Delta Force and the 75th Ranger Regiment. Elite forces rule!

Armor isn't as useful since its becoming low intensity peacekeeping but they are good to have in places like Iraq. Mechanized are good for invading a small country. I'm only a kid so feel free to ignore/critisize me(except for my spelling 'cause u need spellcheck on forum)

If your goal is to learn a trade, do yourself a favor and enlist in one of the other services. I've said this before, but the only logical reason to join the Marines is to be a Marine. Don't get me wrong, we've got the same technical / intellectual jobs as the other services -- programmers, avionics, satellite communication, etc. It's just that you can get the same training in the other services with less sacrifice on your part. People who want the easy way out usually don't do well with us.

On the other hand, self-improvement is stressed in the USMC. If you want to go to school and can fit it into your work schedule no one is going to trip you up. You just have to keep your priorities straight:

(1) Mission Accomplishment

(2) Troop Welfare

<coughing up Mountain Dew through my nose, imagining myself as a recruiter>

Heh.

No, I'm not a recruiter, we're all like this. I assure you I could never try to convince someone to join the USMC. You'll know if it's for you. If there is any doubt out there, DO NOT BASE ANY DECISIONS ON MY OPINIONS. Think for yourself and do your research.

Air Force all the way, was going to go into the Marines but i had several family members tell me that they would kneecap me if i did. every male member of my family has been in the service, mostly Navy but i dont like the water. hell i get severe anxiety just going over the pond to Europe & southern Asia.

love the Marines discipline though, if i was not in the Air Force then i would certainly be in the Marines.

Ralph, I wasnt trying to say any branch was closer to any other, but in terms of discipline i like the way Marines handle their subordinates. i have a couple of troops that i supervise and sometimes (well, more often than not) i have to get after them about certain things, then they say im being to hard on them. thats when im told by my supervisor that i should be nice, whereas ive witnessed a Marine supervisor give his troops an order and they carry it out no questions asked.

maybe its the quality of troops coming in nowadays.

No war in modern times will be won without air power.
