ArmA 2 OA is not responding

Recommended Posts

So this started about a week ago now. What happens is that whilst I'm playing the game smoothly and normally, my game freezes for about 2 seconds then turn off saying 'ArmA 2 OA is not responding'. Sometimes, I have to go to the task manager and turn it off myself when it freezes. This also happens in DayZ. I've tried re-installing the game, re-installing steam, re-installing BattlEye, installing the latest versions of DayZCommander and turning off my anti-virus for some periods of time. The problem can happen about 5 - 20 mins into playing. I checked the notepad for the game and these are SOME of the problems.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

First off, please post walls of text such as the RPT extract in a spoiler, it makes your post and, ultimately, the thread hard to read.

To me these look like error messages from a server called "world.guns.ru".

Always start troubleshooting from the simplest possible configuration.

Do you have the same issues playing SP offline, vanilla OA, no beta, no mods loaded? (Play one of the BI stock missions).

If so, close the game and delete the RPT (it is perfectly safe to do so, the game creates a new one when there is something to write to it).

Restart the game. After the game freezes, exit and post the RPT in a spoiler unless it is very large in which case zip it & upload it somewhere like mediafire.

Edit: weird, seems world.guns.ru is a multilingual online encyclopaedia of weapons. How on Earth did extracts from that get into an RPT???

Make sure you have no other programs (browser, office, etc.) open when you test,

I don't know how you went about getting this RPT file, but if you examine it you see numerous things listed twice. Everything I see points to addon problems. Like Orcinus suggests "Always start troubleshooting from the simplest possible configuration".

Fist of all go to "Documents\ARMA2" and delete these two files: (maybe make backups first)

Arma2.cfg

Arma2OA.cfg

This will reset Arma to default settings.

Then run Arma2.exe with no addons and see if problems appear. Then run Arma2OA.exe and agagin see if you get the probelms. If all is ok then start slowly adding what ever addons you were using until the problem starts to happen. This is they only way to pinpoint what is causing the problems.

Also by deleting the files above any custom settings you've made will need to be redone.

^^ what Zulu1 said.

What I notice is that:

  • You are still loading the beta. Please run the vanilla game, NOT the beta.
  • Your load line did not mention any addons (please, DELETE the RPT as requested and let the game write a new one! Then run the game once only before posting the RPT).

Where & how have you installed your addons? Installing addons incorrectly (especially placing them in the game's own "Addons" folder) can seriously bugg*r up the game.

Re deleting the .cfgs - good advice. However, if you back them up somewhere else (or change the extension to bak or txt) you can copy the "Keys" section & paste it over the appropriate section of the new .cfg (back that up first also), which avoids the tedium of re-entering your preferred key configuration.

Guys, I'm really confused. Bear in mind I'm not the computer genius. All I do is download and play. I don't get what you mean by these .cfg & Keys folders and stuff. I need simple instructions

OK, sorry about that :)

The RPT is a log file. Search for "Arma2OA.rpt". Make a shorcut to it on your desktop for convenience. Then delete the RPT (it's perfectly safe to do so).

Search your PC for Arma2.cfg & arma2OA.cfg. For DVD installs these are usually in My Documents/Arma2. Steam may be different, but no matter. Make backups then delete them.

The "keys" I referred to meant the section that stores the settings for the keyboard & mouse - forward, back, fire etc. My bad, these are actually in the player profile not the .cfg, so don't worry about them (memo to self - don't post when suffering a morning caffeine deficiency :oh:).

Go to the main game install directory (not the expansions/beta folder). Make a shortcut to arma2OA.exe on your desktop. Right click on the shortcut and select "Properties".

In the line "Target", which in my case reads exactly (including the quotes)

"N:\ArmA II\arma2oa.exe"

add a space followed by

-mod=

which forces the game to load with no mods. Hence mine would look like

"N:\ArmA II\arma2oa.exe" -mod=

Hit "Apply" and close it.

Use that to start the game (it's worth checking in "Expansions"in the in-game menu that indeed you have no mods loaded). Then follow the procedure outlined in my first post. Don't change any of the video or other setting for the first trial. Please report the results in the format I suggested.

I did exactly what you said Orcinus. I played ArmA 2 OA on the first mission of the singleplayer fine for a while. But then I remembered that my AVG was turned off, so I turned it on, then my game stopped. When I tried played the second proper mission on the Operation Arrowhead campaign it said 'You cannot play/edit this mission' and then came up with a load of ArmA 2 ca files. Multiplayer works fine. I've just played about half an hour of Wasteland.

I never go online with the AV turned off, too many 'drive-by' attack possibilities from compromised sites.

Make sure your AV is set to allow the game .exes to run as trusted files (how you do that depends on your AV). You may need to apply Robinson's Second Law ("When all else fails, read the instructions").

You also need to check where & how your mods are installed, there is definitely something is very off about the way all those extraneous "world.guns.ru" messages got into the orginal RPT. I foresee trouble ahead...

Are you using the "@modname" folder method?

The only way I've ever installed mods is by PlaywithSIX or DayZCommander, but it does put the mods into '@modname' types e.g. @DayZ, @CBA, @DayZRP

What's Robinson's Second Law?

That's fine but launch Arma2OA with a shortcut. Make a shortcut by right clicking and holding the mouse button on the Arma2OA.exe file and drag it over a bit and release the button and select "create short cut". Then make sure the Target Line shows:

"C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA2\ArmA2OA.exe"

This will launch Arma2OA without any addons.

...oh and most importantly make sure you have not added any addons to the Arma2 addons folders. If all addons were installed to @xxx folders you should be OK.

Since 1.60 (? - I forget) the last-loaded mods are saved in the user profile. These will load if you just use that target line, and if a mod is crashing the game it wil simply crash again which will confuse new players.

To be certain you load with no mods, whatever you did on the last run, the shortcut target line should read the way I posted above; i.e. with -mod= at the end of the line.

What do I do if I get this on my ArmA2.rpt?

Nothing. It's a trivial bug in the game itself. It always appears in my RPT.

Seems like the vanilla game is running fine. Want to try running the beta - without any mods as yet?

Beta works great, but when I go into the menu of the vanilla ArmA 2 OA it closes my game and shows those 'looped for animation' scripts in the rtp!

?? Do you mean that after running the beta and exiting, the vanilla game does not run correctly? Did you start the vanilla game with a shortcut including the -mod= parameter? Or??

Sounds like it may be loading at least one mod that's broken. Do the following offline in SP mode

Try command line launch (Start->Run) with excactly the same line as in the shortcut except at the end will be -mod=@cba;@cbaA2;@cbaOA

If that works, add one of your mods at the end. If that works remove it & add another. You'll have to check each one on its own (except many require CBA, so don't remove those).

I added that to the Properties, still goes off. I was just trying out the Guerrilla's Vehicle's & Weapons Scenario and it turns itself off. I checked the .rpt and it says this like always. This happens for both the Beta (without code) & vanilla

Have you looked in the Windows Event Viewer (contol panel->admin tools) for warning & error messages in System & Applications?
