Do you mean Tom Carew's "Jihad: The Secret War in Afghanistan"? I've read it. Makes a fine illustration of how SAS trains its members to think on their feet. If what the guy writes is true, he sure got out of a few tight spots on the ground...

Overall, the best book written by an ex-SAS member is, IMO, "The Eye of the Storm" by Peter Ratcliffe who was the SAS RSM during the Gulf War. He's far less self-glorifying than McNab and the rest of the ex-SAS-turned-writers bunch.

"Inside the SAS: Who Dares Wins" by Tony Geraghty is the best overall history of the 22nd SAS I've read

"Jihad" (see above) is interesting because it describes one ex-SAS operative's involvement in a black-bag operation (in Afghanistan, in this case) but it's scope is limited to that operation only.

*sighs* And I thought we'd have an intelligent discussion of the book. Silly me.

Anyway, imagine yourself in a downed chopper, unable to move, when people show up and cut off your balls, nose and ears (in that order). Har har har. Funny as hell. Bloody hilarious. mad.gif

Interestingly enough, Carew didn't gloat about the Russians one bit in the book. Probably because he actually was down there on the ground... Kinda gives you a different perspective.

Full military deployment in a traditional conflict. Not peace keeping etc. WWII, Fawklands, Malya, Korea etc. Most veterans I know have spoken of their respect for the fighting skills of their opponents.

I don't see how you can find this "cool".

I personally find it disturbing and thought provoking confused.gif

Aaaaaanyway, IMO the most insightful part of the book is that British and American special forces have trained and equipped the same people which they now have to fight. Talk about something coming back and biting you in the ass...

another good SAS book is "born in the desert". this is a story of the SAS in the N. africa campaign from the unit's doctor point of view.

well at first, yes its very funny to read that. smile.gif

But if you think of it carefully and how you would feel if you were that pilot, it would be disturbing.

Though, still at first it IS "Bloody Hilarious" to read it. biggrin.gif

Personally I think there is nothing 'hilarious' about torturing someone, enemy or not. I fully understand that there were atrocities commited by both sides...but two wrongs dont make a right.

War is hell, that much is true. But the extent to which you will go, even in an armed conflict, is integral to your personal system of ethics, and even personal honour. But then, I am writing this from an air conditioned mall in a nation that hasnt had a real war fought on its soil wink.gif Although I would like to think that, if faced with the opportunity to kill an enemy, that I would use a bullet...not carve him up for sport or revenge. No matter what his compatriots have done to my country.
