Most underrated movies

Recommended Posts

Today we live in a world where all you have to do is chuck in a female power icon or something that's ''like, soooo gross'' for films to rake in billions, despite the fact that the whole thing has been done before and the entire movie was naff, but i was thinking about films that are majorly underrated. Films that are 10 times better than the whole ''I'm a girl and i'm on top'' thing that is going on. Well, i thought i'd make a tribute to in my opinion a film that should've gained massive success but didn't because its fairly low budget -

The Boondock Saints - i watched this about 5 years ago on very late night sky, and it was on loast night again very late. It's about these two irish brothers in New York, they're like a good version of the IRA in that they just go around killing people they deem evil, such as Mafia guys, Drug Dealers and pimps, with the help of this Italian Mafia package boy who is a complete fuck up. During their killing spree they are being tracked by a very funny police guy, played by Willem Defoe, who in the end realises that he wants to help these irishmen. Its really cool because they organise the hits, then you see them right before they do it, but then, it shifts like 5 hours ahead when the police are there and you're looking at the crime scene and Defoe goes through his analysis. While he does it you see the action, and the action is wicked. It's not amazingly realistic, but there a lot of guys in balaclava's shooting people with dual berretas, which is always a good thing. Not only that but theres this italian mob boss who says the best pissed off italian mobster thing ever. And to top it all off, it has Billy Connoly as as this hitman who is mental, and he's sent to kill the irishmen (great firefight involving Connoly with 6 guns strapped to his chest), but in the end he realises he is in fact their father or something, and they join forces and go about killing bad guys. The acting in this is amazing, it also has a few pornstars in it (like that short fat guy with the beard who shows up everywhere). The action is top notch, the acting is top notch, the laughs are top notch and it generally kicks ass. You also get to see a (homosexual) willem defoe cross dressing and begging a fat italian guy to fuck him before shooting him. I recommend everyone see's this movie cos it kicks ass

The Big Lewbowski (it seems a lot of people either dont liek this film or havent heard of it) and an Aussie film called Two Hands. The yare both great movies, love em but it seems no one has ever seen or heard of them, especially Two Hands. I saw it on channel 4 and decided that I had to buy it smile.gif

And the first 4 Lexx movies. I dont know what it is about Lexx but i love the series. Tacky, verging on pornographic at times but also pretty funny.

Hey, at times Lexx had a really cool storyline to it. Most other times it was just tacky though smile.gif A couple of biggish names have been in lexx too. Craig Charles (Red Dwarf), Malcolm Macdowell (ermm hes famous. Honest). Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner) and Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Show) to name but a few.

When is that Dog Soldiers movie set? They are still using SLARs so it cant be set in today unless the its about the reservers and they still use the SLAR but I dont know if they do, because Im not English and Im not familiar with the British Army reservers. I think a movie that has never been given the fame it deserves is 'Stalingrad'. Its a film made by the same German crew that made Das Boot(The Boat), that classic WW2 U-Boat Movie. Stalingrad is way better. As the name suggests, its set in the battle for Stalingrad in 1942/43 which is described as the turning point in the war. If you thought Saving Private Ryan was a powerful movie, this will shock you. If you thought Saving Private Ryan was absolute trash and wasnt powerful at all, youll still like it. It shows the brutal truth of street fighting. When streets covered by machine guns are killing fields, were two sides lose whole companies to take a single factory. And the cold. And the evil little Nazis(theres a particular one who was really evil but had to pay his dues). If you like WW2 war movies, or just war movies, hunt this one down.

I have a bunch of Soviet and Russian war movies on VHS covering WWII (Great Patriotic War, actually wink.gif ), Afghanistan and Chechnya conflicts. IMO, they are some of the best war movies made and certainly underrated as they aren't generally released in Europe or the US. A shame, since they represent a Russian viewpoint of those events which is largely ignored or misrepresented in Hollywood movies (the German "Stalingrad" is about the only exception - that is a great movie).

I saw a movie on tv once about 2 russian soldiers that got captured by some locals and imprisoned. One was an old veteran russian and the other was a young naive boy that was good at fixing things. Perhaps someone knows the name of this movie? Was called prison on the mountain or something. Was in russian and subtitled i believe.

They are regulars who are on exersise (their SA80 have blanks), they come accross slaughtered special forces and take their weapons, mp5s and one has an SLR. The Special forces were trying to catch a lycanthrope (werewolf) but failed.

Yeah Stalingrad and Das Boot are great too. But not underated. Dog soldiers didn't play for long and didn't get the attention in deserved.

That was on FilmFour the other day, I didn't have time to watch it all, and I can't remember the name for the life of me. It looked good though.

Dog soldiers was toungue in cheek, It was a good laugh, but also some good fights (you've got to have a break from high brow cerebral stuff once in a while).

If you get the name of that film post it up will you? It will probably come back onto FF, they cycle the films for a while...

The Adventures of Hudson Hawk.

Always panned and reviled, but one of the funniest 'spoof' movies ever made. EVER. smile.gif

I mean come on..a guy pluneges off a cliff and miraculously shows up in the next scene. He explains it away by saying 'Fucking sprinklers, can you believe it?!?'

It's campy and fun in the way Python or Sellers as Inspector Cluseau are.

If you've never seen it and you appreciate an over the top satire..you'll love it

Para, I agree. Dog soldiers was a great film. For such a low budget film, the Werewolves looked bloody good, and the script was quite amusing. Plus is shamelessy stole quotes from other films smile.gif (Apocolypse now, Matrix etc)

I don't think it got a US release, only a UK/Euro one, but I think it'll be on DVD soon. I think we'll have a new Mess movie for the next few months!

Edit - Typo

Another great underrated film: Series Seven

Try to see it on DVD, the extras really add to the movie and help expand the storyline.
