Breaker 1-9...

How... 70's of you biggrin.gif

Up here, CB radios generally wind up being used by the same category of person who..if they played computer games... would describe themselves as '1337' wink.gif

If you are really interested in learning a lot more about radios and having more normal people to talk to, look into ham radios. They have some great new 'no code rquired' licenses, so you dont need to learn morse code smile.gif

Yea my friend's dad is into those, and your right you hear the wierdest people on the CB. Mostly they are nice if they talk to ya. But there are some guys....Oh boy wierd/dont shut up/cant even figure out what they are saying.

My friend's dad thats into hams told me a funny story and keeps reminding me of it. He said when he was a kid CB was brand new and everyone wanted one. So he he got one but didnt have enough money to buy an atenna. So he jerry rigged one up with coat hangers. He said worked like a charm. Then one day the some guys came out and told him he couldnt do that with the coat hangers. So he stopped for a bit and went back to it like a week or so later. He said every Monday night he had people over listeining to his CB. Then over the years it got kinda trashed so he switched to HAMs.

Its fun for car trips too. If you have a like 2 cars following each other.  Then its fun to have one in each to tell the other of crashes, slow downs, where to turn off etc etc. Someday id like a HAM radio, but they cost quite a bit of money.

Yeah I got some CB's around. They saved my butt in the winter many a time. I used to get some monster skip and could talk to people in other states. But I had a little problem with my ground and it fried the transmit. Now I can only transmit a mile or two but I still receive just fine. Most of my stuff is kinda old and has a little more power than modern made cb's. But I only use the base setup when theres a bad winter storm ,the truckers are better at telling road conditions than the news smile.gif

But I use mobil/handheld units when out in the woods with friends.

I like Ham, boiled ham is good.

I remeber listening to radio broadcasts from Cuba last winter. It was cool. I don't remember what kind of radio and such.

Think of a walkie talkie that you played with when you were really young. The kind that you have to be really close to each other to talk too. Now imagine a better looking one but 8x better. I keep forgetting what HAM stands for. My friend's dad has alot of HAM radios and his little hand helds can get out about 120 miles if he hits repeaters.

Now cloney, i believe you were listeining to a HAM. Maybe im wrong though.

Ham: a poor operator. A 'plug

I assume that means someone with an amateur rig of some sort that doesnt have the skill/power of someone in the employ of one of the telegraph companies. That's the definition of the word given in G. M. Dodge's 'The Telegraph Instructor' even before radio.

As for what Cloney was listening to, that was likely Short Wave. Sues some of the same frequencies but it's more of a recevie only thing. smile.gif

Nope , I never got intrested HAM's. Although I knew a guy who did. He worked for the FCC so it was second nature to him. But I'll stick to CB's and walkietalk for my shortrange comm needs. Out where I live everyone has handheld motorola sets, it can be a life saver during hunting season.

It's always fun to talk to city folk(wow am I a hick or what) who are hunting for the first time ,and are totally lost smile.gif

I only hunt deer. But I also fish some.

Around here ,a few people keep their FRSunits on all the time.

As some people(AKA muddrunner noobs) think running an ATV through the woods is cool ,until they end up under their ATV with a broken leg. Lucky for that dude a friend of mine was talking to his son with a frs-walkie and heard his call for help, he helped the guy befor he went into shock.

When the woods are full of deer hunters it's kinda fun to listen to city dudes who never hunted befor complaining to others in their hunting party over the radio about being lost smile.gif

My friend and I want a pair of walky-talkies. Not the crappy kind we had when were were 8, but a decent pair for all sorts of adventures.

How much would than run us? Any suggestions of what to get? I started researching this stuff but was totally lost. confused.gif

Look into FRS radios.

They are license free and have a 2 mile or so range.

They have ones with GPS's built in, an those look really really cool smile.gif

It depends on what you're looking for. What kind of adventures are you planning to go on? Hiking? It also depends on how much you want to pay for them. If you want a good pair i recommend CB (citizen band radios) lil pricey but you can sometimes find a good deal on them. The FRS work but really dont get the true 2 miles. CB can supposedly get 5 but i really dont think thats true either.

It all depends where you're at and the type of weather and things that can get in the way of transmissions. If you are by water they work even better because the radio waves bounce off the water instead of the normal ground soaking them up. Its a lil hard to understand a first but once you get into them its quite fun.
