Multimission Map

Recommended Posts

How hard (or is it even possible) would it be to create a map with multiple small maps in it? Say 6-12 smaller areas.

Instead of one big terrain a package of smaller game areas with different terrains, environments and lighting.

Obviously the design would need to be carefully done so that each area looked and felt self contained.

I guess 40*40km should be considered as max, while I recommend a smaller world if the world should ever be finished :)

I guess you could fulfill all your wishes, except for lighting. I guess that can only defined for one location on Earth...(long/lat values in config affect sun, moon and star location and movement)

Is there a tool for ArmA that will let me "paint" my own terrains? I want to push and pull the terrain map rather than rely on real world terrain data.

I'f I'm going to start working on this I'd like for it to work in ArmA3 as well. Otherwise I'll just tinker with the Arma2 tools until new tools are available.

Get the Free Edition of THIS

The free edition is fully featured - apart from a heightmap limitation of 2048x2048 cells (Which is no limitation at all as far as Arma 2 is concerned, since a bug in Visitor means thats the biggest grid size we can use ;) )

There's also a "textured layers" output limitation of 4096x4096 in the free edition.

That IS a little more serious since, with a bit of practise, L3DT can generate ready made basic Mask & Sat layers for your "geotypical" terrain, since realworld imagery won't be available...

Fortunately there's a very generous completely unlimited 90 day trial available of the "Pro Edition"!

That'll let you output Sat & Mask layers in truly useful sizes - up to 20480x20480px and beyond if you like....

There's a decent 3D view and plenty of "art tools" to allow you to manually "paint" whatever style of heightmap you prefer, plus theres built-in basic "autogeneration" tools to get you started with a "base map" if you prefer...

A Mighty Tool indeed, and it's like only $30-odd or something... anyone who's used up their 3 months and is still making maps tends to buy a license at that stage... it's an Invaluable tool....

Thanks...any suggestions on how to appropriately scale blank map before starting. Just as a base example I'd like something about 1/2 mile wide and 2 miles long.

I think the height map has to be the same on both x and z.

So like 256x256,512x512, 1048x1048

In l3dt you can choose the size then your climate (Artic, costal, desert) and it will make a terrain for you that you can edit or you can start with a flat nothing and build it up yourself.
