arma2server .exe & server.cfg

Recommended Posts

After searching many server.cfg and server config threads I haven't found the answers I'm looking for. I came across a server.cfg "guide" by kellys heroes that wasn't of much help to me, aswell as the wiki which wasn't much help either. Most sources I've came across are to vague for me to understand and just assume I know x or y. I want to setup a server cfg for the arma2server.exe (dedicated) so I can test MP missions and maybe have a few friends join in. Name the server, make it persistent etc. I'll just copy and paste the one from kellys heros and make the changes I need. Anyhow;

1.How do I create the config file? Just by saving a text document with .cfg extension?

1. Do I place the config file in the same directory as Arma2?

2. What is an example of how the target line of my a2server shortcut should be? I wont be using the -server command on an actual A2 shortcut, but running a dedicated from the actual arma2server.exe shortcut itself.

Im guessing you are going to be running this server off hardware you own rather than a GSP. Am I right?

You may find it much easier to launch a server using Ta2DST found here: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?104991-Tophe-s-ArmA2-Dedicated-Server-Tool-(TA2DST)

It will create all the config files for you and allow you to easily manage what mods, if any, your server runs.

If that is not what you are after you can, as you rightly say, just write the config in a text document and save it with .cfg extension. You will have to create a shortcut to the server.exe with the correct launch parameters to load the config, set the port etc.

You don't need to use -server if you run the ARMA2COserver.exe file, only if you run the standard game .exe (that you would usually use for playing a game yourself).

Yeah going to be using my own machine. I already have a shortcut to the arma2server.exe. And I already have the config. I just need to know what to place in the target line to run the config... aswell as where to place the config file. The wiki has a startup parameters guide but it seems to be for using FTP/GSP or w/e.

note: I've setup this same server in the past with a config a year ago. I just can't remember exactly what to do, but I do know that it's not as complicated as the wiki makes it seem. I need to place the config in a certain location and execute the cfg file via startup parameters on the server.exe shortcut

I realize I dont have to use the -server command on the actual server.exe. I was just making it clear that i was infact going to use the server.exe and not an actual game shortcut with -server. As stated, the wiki was of no help to me, as I've went over all of that info. I'm clearly using my own machine and not a GSP if I'm going to use the arma2server.exe to setup a dedicated, so creating an A2 profile isn't nessecary, i'll just use the one I already have.

I just need a clearer explanation on where to place the config file (i already have the cfg file) and what parameters i need to put into the server.exe target line to run the config.

As I told Aenigma, i've done this in the past, I just forget some small details and the wiki is overly complicated for such a trivial task because its for setting up with a GSP and not your own machine.

Honestly I would advise using the tool I linked you to to throw a server up for your needs. Once you have used it once you can preview how it launches the .exe and do it manually if you like.
