Help on modelling a unit

Recommended Posts

I'm new to modelling and the forums. I have been searching for tutorials on how to model units(soldiers) for quite some time now. All I'd found were tutorials for modelling objects and vehicles. I'm trying to model a character/soldier from scratch - with the gears, camo, etc. I have no idea what I'm doing. I have downloaded the tools needed to model plus a few model templates. I really need help from people who are experienced in making addons for Arma2. Thanks

This is what im trying to model.

1. There are indeed a lot of tutorials on character modelling, for a number of industry standard software packages. If you are asking for O2 ones, you are out of luck. Everyone (or almost everyone) starts off with bis templates characters. And that is a good thing since you need to keep the same proportions in order for the animations to work.

2. Given the fact that you have no prior experience with modelling (even outside the game industry), i can tell you right now that you aimed very high.

Yeah, I cant seem to find any o2 tutorials. Well yeah I admit that my aim is quite high and that it's almost impossible for me right now. Maybe I'll take up modelling as another hobby of mine and learn how to model. So I could actually use other modelling softwares to model arma 2 units?

You can use whatever software you want for modelling purposes, even though in the end you'll need to have the mesh configured in O2.

My advice to you would be to open up A1 sample models, or A2 one for that matter and familiarize yourself with what you want to do before you start work on it.

Work on creating a model you're happy with first, then worry about the technical crap. If you're new to modelling, maybe you should do a couple of warm up exercises first. I know it feels like a waste of time to model a couch or chair or whatever but I guarantee you that getting some kind of simple model into the game will save you time later.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I'll go on and practice modelling after my finals (:. I'll worry about the rest later on :D.

Where do you find the BIS template characters you talked about?

Also I just downloaded the BI_Editing_Tools_2_Setup and I was wondering if this is the latest and greatest of the editing tools for VBS2/Arma2?

As far as the tools and characters go though Arma2 would be a very similar process to VBS2 since its built on the same tech?

Thanks for all the info!

As Pufu has stated, if you have questions about developing for VBS 2, please head on over to their forums.
