Counter-Strike type mod Idea/Where to Start

Hello guys. Been playing Arma for some time now but myself and a few college buddies just had an idea to modify it for our own tastes. Basically wanting to turn it into a more realistic version of Counter-Strike that we loved growing up. Scale down the number of players and map sizes. Basically turn it into a game that if we only have 30 minutes to blow we could enjoy in between classes. We love Arma and Project Reality but unless you have a few hours of free time your not gunna have enough time to have fun with it. Now we have modded the source engine before basically for our own enjoyment years back but want to start toying with the idea of doing it for Arma 2. Right now we just want to make a mod for our own enjoyment but if we did it right and thought it was good then we would release it for others to play.

Now we have found a lot of mission editing and things like that but not anything on how or where to start on making a whole mod similar to what Project Reality or Dayz has done.

If someone could point us in the right direction as how to get started we would greatly appreciate it!

Yeah, this is more of a mission making problem.

Heres some gen advice: Look to see if others have done this before you, or made a similar game mode. Maybe even for ARMA or OFP. Then investigate that, unpack it and see how they did it.

Then young padawan, you will learn.

One more question I have is how the crap do I edit things like menus and such? I can't seem to find any sort of guides for this. Maybe I'm searching for the wrong terms?

To change the menu's, you would need to make an addon. But like the guys said above, your best/ realistic way to go is just making a mission. No need for a mod, unless you plan on making new units or guns.

Why do you need to edit an existing menu rather than creating a new Dialog via the mission?
