Arma 2 & OA GTX 680 Performance problem

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

So I just got a Gigabyte Windforce OC GTX 680 and I absolutely love it! There is, however, one problem, my FPS in Arma 2, OA and Combined Operations. I notice this when I play normal Arma as well as the DayZ mod. I will set my graphics to the lowest or highest they can go but it doesn't change anything. As some of you may know the new Nvidia 600 architecture includes a GPU clock boost where the card independently controls the Mhz of the core clock. Although I will get 40 fps average the clock is turned down to 600 mhz~ where as normal for the 680 is about 1071~. Arma 2 also only use about 40% of the card according to my EVGA precision. I wanted to know if there was anything I could to help set Arma to fully use my card instead of telling it it doesnt need as many Mhz and only uses 40% of those that it assigns. I also thinks its worth mentioning that in BF3 (An extremely well optimized game) I get no lower than 90 fps with 90% usage of my card on all Ultra settings so I know this problem is not related to the card itself. If there is anyway I can boost my FPS I will try it, whether it be further overclocking, a performance mod or what have you. I also youtubers playing the game on high graphics with the same card and not experiencing this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated!

This is worrying, as I am building a 680 rig soon. But I feel like I've heard of this issue with ArmA 2 so hopefully you get it figured out soon! ArmA 2 never was the best optimized game, sadly.

Yeah I was so happy when I got the card (I upgraded from a 470) and its AMAZING on everything besides arma lol. But don't let that discourage you the cards great and I would suggest mine because I have yet to see the temp to go over 59 degrees celcius and the fans never go over 50% its whisper quiet but yeah any help, greatly appreciated!

its okay. Arma2 just WAY more CPU-hungry than ALL other games, you know.

both for graphics, sound, AI and anything.

so anything ok w you GPU, i assume. btw its nice card, basically only lack 2x more onboard memory for Arma2 and DP shaders support for my GPGPU appz.

you had spare cash - buy best CPU you can and do mild OC, after improving cooling[CPU coolers, case fans, maybe case switching].

My current CPU is an i7 950, a bit old I know but I see no need for upgrading i highly doubt arma is using all 4 cores to their full potential (not including the extra 4 virtual cores). The problem is definately from bad optimizng and I wanted to know if there was something I could do to the card itself or the game just to get it to actually use more than 30% of the card at 300 mhz. (Way too low compared to the base core of 1071mhz)

problem has nothing to do with the gtx680, the cpu determines performance on your system with the setings you're running.

i7 950's are still quite fast, overclock well too.

I dont think theres a need to overclock my cpu its the same one i was using with my 470 and i got like 60 fps on medium with that. With this it down clocks my mhz (Bc Arma says it doesnt need more than that) and then only uses about 30% of the gpu I just want it to correctly tell my gpu "Hey we need the whole thing for this game to run fast" Bc I know for a fact I could get 60 fps with gfx on high wo AA or shadows

you can go to nvidia control panel, go to 3d settings and then set it on "prefer maximum performance", that will stop the downclocking.

Try disabling Hyperthreading and see if the problem persists. I have a GTX 680 with i7-2600k and the game runs fantastic, but if I turn on Hypterthreading my FPS takes a serious dip. It didn't do this when I had a 6970 (although that card had it's own set of problems).

Same here, with previous gtx 580 all was fine, with gtx 680 another situation, with 580 on very high was 70-80fps, with 680 - 40-50fps. Sad.
