server specs

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

we're looking at the possibility to start renting a dedicated server for our Arma needs. Currently we have a relatively simple VPS server which is used for TS server and one Arma 2 server (1core, 2gb memory). We have another VPS server which is also running an Arma 2 server.

We're currently looking at this machine, but I have no clue how much such a machine could handle (running Windows OS)?

Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Quad-Core

16 GB DDR3 RAM

2 x 3 TB SATA 6 Gb/s HDD 7200 rpm (Software-RAID 1)

NIC 1 Gbit OnBoard connected at 100 Mbit

Ideally it would either support 2 Arma2 servers (like one with mods, one with less mods but not always used simultaneously) or 1 big Arma 2 server (for example to be used for joint co-ops with 40 ~ 50 people). On top of that we would like to run our TS server (~50+ slots) and maybe a Raven Shield server or something similar now and again (running only one specific night a week for example). Of course once Arma 3 gets released we will use it for that.

Are the server specs reasonable for what we want, or do we need to look at bigger machines? Any help appreciated :)

I do have Intel xeon 4 cores at 3.8ghz (it is a bit slower then yours i7 2600k) 8GB ram , 500GB disk, - I run heavily modified (twice more AI then original version) domination mission for 22 players - so far no lags, no problems, sever fps - 30-50 , lowest I had was 25fps, but try to ask if u can rent server for testin 2-3 days is enough.

What operating system? That is going to be the key question...

We run an E3-1270V2 which is a good bit faster that this system... and it can handle complicated missions with mods (ace, acre, rh, etc)... up to about 65-70 players on Linux... on windows 2008r2 testing shows about 50-55 players on the same hardware.

I'd suggest looking for an E3-1230V2 it's going to give you slightly better performance, and should be available for about the same price. Otherwise, it should work ok for the setup you want.

Network bandwidth is the biggest killer.

I think we worked out for roughly 40 players 13Mbps each way is comfortable. That's 325kbps per player.

16Gb memory is heaps, although you'll notice there's a significant difference between what's allocated and what's actually used (i.e. task manager vs #monitor in game).

It won't allocate any more than 2048mb RAM regardless of what you do anyway, but I rarely see it go over 1024. In game "actual" usage usually sits at 3-400mb even with a truckload of AI.
