Im emigrating........

Problem is, we'd then have an explosion in the fly population who spread diseases and other nasty stuff-

I have a mild Arachnophobia but i realise that spiders (in the UK) are harmless and people friendly whereas flies ,mosquitos and other insects arent

36 trilion¬! are you sure?

who counted? tounge.gif

I heard on the radio this week that a doctor found a spider living in the ear of a woman. :o

When I was a child, I remember seeing on TV either that tarantula movie or a similar one with giant crabs. Whichever it was, it scared the wits out of me then.

Then you certainly like this one:

Makes a great Wallpaper, don´t know what type of tarantula it is though.

Sometime back i´ve seen a report on australian spiders, and they were showing agressive species, one even jumped at the cameraman trying to bite him.

This one is nothing but cute:

Holy 7\/<K!

Id **** myself if i had one of those loose in my bedroom!!!

wow.gifwow.gifwow.gifwow.gif

i know my arachnophobia is illogical, but that doesnt seem to help at all

theres something basically wrong with creatures with exoskeletons,

i mean who needs to discover aliens when weve got insects!

I also have a fear of other large insects, large beatles etc...

i think most Arachnophobia comes from childhood episodes or social indoctrination

(we're always told how scary spiders are)

I used to have a recurring nightmare till 2 or 3 years ago about gigantic (3 foot long) beatle-creatures that lived in waterpools in caves

im starting to agree with Chickenhawk -insects should be outlawed!

Spiders are great.  They are hard working patient little guys.  They build their webs and wait for days until some unfortunate insect runs into them.  Just because you guys are little girlie wusses doesn't mean they're bad  sad.gif

If I see a small spider in my room building a web I take him and put him outside in the backyard, as I know he'll starve to death in my room (no flies here, duh).

I once had a big black spider with a cross on his back living just outside my window.  He was pretty big, about 4-5 cm in body length.  Whenever I killed a fly I put it in his web and then watched him come and cover her in that gooey stuff.

Also other bugs are quite pleasant looking, and are hardly pesty.  Like the Dung Beetle

Or the ground beetle

But pests I really hate is the house centipede !  I'm sure each one of us has seen one crawling on the wall/floor at one point or another.  Scary thing is they bite and some can get pretty long, as long as 10cm !!!

This mega-giant 1.82meter long centipede was called Arthropleura.  Jesus almighty ! That's about as tall as me. Good thing this is just a model. Real thing was extinct millions of years ago. I can't imagine them roaming the woods today.

I also hate wasps, like the hornets and yellowjackets.  Bees are cute and hard working, but hornets and such only feed on barbecue and other free food.  Yet they still live after stinging while the bee dies.

I think the thing about arachnids and other arthropods is that they have exactly zero obvious redeeming qualities about them. I mean, they're (mostly) little creepy crawly things that like to bite you, and when they arent biting you you are imagining that they are crawling up your arm to bite you. You dont have them in Britain, but scorpions are a perfect example of this. They just look evil. I know a guy who had one surprise him in the shower- you can imagine how that felt. Also, when you are out camping or hunting out here you need to check yer boots before you put em on, as one of the little fuckers mightve crawled in there. Did I mention that occasionally we see the garden variety tarantula around here? They arent that bad actually... they just look really freaky.

I don't think spiders are bad. As far as they are concerned my motto towards them is "Live and let live" (unless the spider in question is black and has a red hourglass on its abdomen....not that I would get close enough to look). They are useful unlike other insects. If they come near me, I just give em a quick burst of breath until they get the picture and head the other way.

Doesn't mean they don't scare the living shit outta me though....

All other insects get a close-up view of the bottom of my boot....

You guys ever see Indiana Jones and the Temple of doom?

When she has to stick her hand in that hole with all those bugs..

Scares me just thinking about it...

I didnt know you got tarantulas in Texas, I thought they were mainly a South American or Australian thing. wow.gif

And the next thing down that I hate from spiders is scorpians, especially those big black mofos.....

Heh- remind me never to emigrate to Australia or the USA.

The UK is actually one of the better places in the world for people who hate insects (obviously arctic circle countries/climates have less)

theyre all harmless and most are tiny

.Although thinking about it there are a SHITLOAD of knats in Scotland

(i dont know if theyre called knats stateside)

you step outside in the evening near Loch Ness or somewhere and see about a billion of the useless buggers

(i seem to remember they bite)

There are lots of different kinds of tarantulas, in Texas we just have the regular, brown, uninteresting tarantula. Mostly in Southwest Texas, in the Fort Davis and Big Bend regions, occasionally we see them as far north as where I live in Midland, which isnt really that far north lol
