[Suggestion] For Multiplayer Server Hosting Performance

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I wanted to ask what are you guys going to do for server performance like is there anything new we can adjust to increase our overall performance like changing the server's FPS?

More like keeping the server FPS stable throughout the mission.

Well it would be nice to have it modifyable. Because 60 FPS is weak for a server, like imagine a single game having 30 or 40 players it would lag terribly with only being limited to 60 FPS. But if you have that freedom of being able to have it go up to 500 FPS it would run very silky smooth. Thats my take on it, why bother trying to improve the stability of 60 FPS when you have the freedom of having 500 or 1000 FPS? It would take the bother out trying to edit your mission to be lightweight for online play When there is 500 - 1000 FPS there is almost unlimited possibilties for a really awesome mission and would attract so many players and woulld be nearly lag free. I don't see why that bi studios haven't thought of this yet.

I really wasn't able to follow your logic mate. Care to explain that again? :

1. why do you consider 60FPS server side a low number (afaik a2 server FPS is never going above 50 anyways).

2. how would one push a server FPS to 500-1000 (10-20 times more) and keep it there when a 50-80 player server can crush a good server (quad core xeon, 8gb ram) to it's knees around 2-4 FPS?

For what I am trying to explained:

** After playing warfare for over 5 hours with stock parameters that comes default with the mission the server crashes because the FPS drops to 0 than just dies. Doesn't happen if someone knows what they are doing with their parameters for warfare.

** You can't spawn alot of AI as the server FPS drops to 10 - 15 with over 10 players, after a while it tends to drop even more when the next objective arrives. Depends on mission to.

** It doesn't go past 60, because its limited to that number won't go any higher than that. If it was unlocked and able to edit the number it probably go higher I don't know if its going to work as I say. It'll make a good idea to have ability to unlock the FPS for the server owner to change to a setting that they desire. I'm not saying the server has to have 500 or 1000 FPS but atleast up to 100 - 250 FPS would be atleast awesome.

** How I came up with this thought as I have noticed in some of the source servers they have this option and also call of duty servers. I am not saying my thought is a fact but its what comes through my mind for the thought.

imagine a single game having 30 or 40 players it would lag terribly with only being limited to 60 FPS.

WTF? 10 players at 20fps and 100 players at 20fps are the same thing. It's not like the server fps is divided among the players.

(Did you believe the images displayed on screen is generated at the server and sent to you?)

When it drops below 50 it simply means it has a bigger workload per frame than it's able to finish in 20ms.

Depending partly on the mission that workload also involves more work per player.

The "higher fps is always better" opinion is dubious enough on the client. (How the eye sees the composite of several images when the framerate is that high, is a rant all its own. It's also offtopic here.)

Try to explain just how it will be any kind of useful for the server to have 100 fps rather than 50.

Anytime you think you have a reason, dive into the details until you find why it's wrong or inapplicable.

Any reason that survives until you get to the network, will die then.

Of course, higher fps is better when the fps is too low.

There are many factors that'll bring (server) fps down to where it's unplayable; but those factors are independent from what the max fps is.

Missions and addons should not incrementally increase the amount of work that needs doing, without ever decreasing it; but some do. That will of course go wrong eventually, in the fashion you describe (server fps drops until the game is unplayable.)
