advocatexxx 0 Posted June 9, 2002 Okay so after reading a bunch of reviews on this game I decided, "why not give it a shot?". So I went on and downloaded the <ahem><cough> *demo* (yeah right) from Hotline and figured I'd see what it's like. I downloaded the latest patch and on I went. It's been a week now, and for the love of God I still can't figure out why this game is praised by everyone. It's like chess, only 100 dumber and more boring. Battles are about as exciting as listening to a piece of poop hit the toilet water surface. Sure it has some decent simulation of political systems, their influence and such, but as far as tutorials go there aren't none. They provide you with 240-page manual but the damn letters and pictures in it are so huge that they could have easily fit it on a 80-page manual, though I guess if it's 240 pages than the game looks more detailed than it really is. I won't go into the details but after a week of reading online tutorials (which were a lot more help by the way than the included game tutorials) I've reached the year 2030 in which the game abruptly ends. So I replayed, replayed, played around, I won, I lost, though today I was as happy to take it off my hard drive as I was when I first put it on. Even simCity was more involved than this boring crack of shit. Oh well, so much for wasting a week of my life.
Warin 0 Posted June 9, 2002 I totally agree. Civ III totally did nothing for me. I lost about 4 months of my life to Civ II, and had high hopes for III. It bored me and I quit playing it all together when I got OFP.

Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted June 10, 2002 Me too!!! I bought it cause all magazines were praising it. But why?? I played months on CIV I and realy enjoyed it, but what the hell has realy changed since then. It is just a fucking marketing campaign that makes Sid Meier succeed with his revival games! Isnt this guy smart enough to develope something new?
Ruud van Nistelrooy 0 Posted June 10, 2002 My first impressions weren't that bad, its just the game wasn't as addictive as the others and was way more frustrating. It's a case of building up your civ, getting threatened by all the other civs no matter how nice you are to them, and then just killing wave after wave of enemies as they attack your cities (which are near enough impossible to take). i liked call to power, but civ 3 is just..............shite, after a while. Its one of those games you think you should like but don't
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted June 10, 2002 It is always the same shitty thing! If your island is big enough you will easily beat everyone by the year 1780. But if it is too big and you gotta share it with one, you can still beat the others by 1945. If the island is more like a huge continent than you will be surrounded by assholes that attack you with their huge huge armies and blow your empire to dust by by the year 1300. If your island is too small you just start to suck....you will survive but suck (without any great battles)!!!! After I learned how this game worked I basically automised every little unit... but then I hardly had to do anything except chosing which technology to develope next... but that is how I got bored. After an evening with CIV III I need a night of Wolfenstein online as therapy
advocatexxx 0 Posted June 10, 2002 Yah. it was pretty pathetic that units don't upgrade with ages. My god damn barbarians lived since 4000 BC until 2000 AD ? I swear I had my Barbaric warriors fight against panzer tanks. And how about those Galleys ? Those ships can't cross an ocean without sinking because they were in "treaturous waters". Did Galleys really sink everytime they wanted to cross the sea ? I think not.
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted June 10, 2002 Oh I actually think that ships in early times indeed followed their path always near to a beach! That is why you can still find so much chinese porcelane on the old trade routes along the beaches! But you are somehow right, sometimes the enemy doesnt have more than 3 phalanx defending his city and you loose 4 marines without killing one of them, YEAH RIGHT
