Operation Flashpoint Question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I just bought a copy of OPF 2 Dragon Rising as ARMA 2 has sparked my interest in the war sim genre.

Just a question - what is / was the relationship between ARMA 2 and OPF2?

Would I be right in saying that the original Operation Flashpoint 1 was a classic and that the "hardcore sim" crowd have gravitated to Arma 2?

Would OFP 2 then be considered a "lesser sim" than Arma 2?

My initial impressions playing both of these is that OPF2 has the far better engine (all maxxed on my rig) but Arma 2 "feels" more "real"...just my opinion from a sim virgin.

Thanks

Operation Flashpoint = developed by BIS, published by Codemasters

Then BIS and CM splitted. CM owns the name (which really just means the two words) Operation Flashpoint. They do not own a single line of code nor do they own any right to release a sequel. BIS owns the right to release a sequel but they do not own the name.

So the real sequel to the original OFP was Armed Assault which then evolved to ArmA 2 and next year to ArmA 3.

"That game" released by CM has absolutely nothing in common with all games developed by BIS (maybe excluding the fact that you are a soldier and can fire weapons, but that's really it).

Mainly CM looked what made OFP great and consequently made OFP2 being the opposite of it.

Hmm cant use the link but your info explains why I've tried going to "mod" sites for OFP2 and they all say "closed" / "dead" or variations of this...pity as the game engine seems very impressive. But that would be typical of CM...pump out a game and give it fuck all support or aftermarket patches etc...

The only impressive thing about OFP DR engine is that it makes you constantly wonder what concrete wall programmers and designers were hitting with their heads that the game only has literally 2 models of trees and bushes seem to be extinct, AIs can only run in straight lines, but not shoot and were they covering everything with piss filter to cover that up?

The engine for DR is about as impressive as the engine in my great nans 1950 rust bucket of a car that can only do 3mph.

OFP DR discussion has no place in the Arma 2 forums.

The OFP DR topic was locked as far as I know so lets leave that the discussion about that piece of waist to the CM forums.
