fireone 10 Posted November 4, 2011 Newb. Managed to get through trial by fire . Now onto "Eye for an eye" No matter what instructions are issued to my AI squad members, after a few seconds/minutes they become insubordinate and ignore all commands . They proceed to stand ,often under the lights in the main street , refuse to take cover when asked to and fire rather than being discreet. This gets them killed. The mission ends .Even though I remain alive. Is there a way I can tie these bozos up or keep them in barracks so I can try and do my best on my own ? Is one of the aims of this SP mission to learn how to control the AI squaddies ?
polecat.uk 11 Posted November 4, 2011 I think by pressing T you can take over the ai and drop there ammo, that at least would stop them shooting
CameronMcDonald 146 Posted November 4, 2011 My strategy: I love this mission. Anyways, put your sniper and machinegunner on the hill to the east, south of where Hastrmann is, with a good view over the town. They are pretty much useless in CQB with their weapons anyway. maturin 12 Posted November 4, 2011 You can just leave them behind somewhere. But I can't tell if you're describing glitchy behavior or just the AI being more autonomous and less cooperative in combat mode. In battle, they take some liberties with movement orders, and will not hold their fire if an enemy has acquired them. Patch your game and look up some squad command tutorials. fireone 10 Posted November 5, 2011 (edited) Done. Followed your strategy Cameron. Took three attempts. Was getting nowhere before. Thanks. After parking the squaddies on the hill ,went to south side of church ,had to deal with the machine gunner surrounded by sand bags and then s_l_o_w_l_y crawled to BDM to lay satchel charge. I like the T keyboard press Polecat . I would have run the mission as the sniper if Cameron's suggestion didn't work for me. In case others have trouble with the extraction, I eventually found the radio command to ask Petra to come to pick us up. Oh and he's in a truck not a car as the notes say. In fact the AI ended up doing the difficult work of finding the warlord and dealing with one of the machine gunners around the BDM. So in the end the AI came in very useful. "AI being more autonomous and less cooperative in combat mode." Maturin definitely this was very true before asking them to stay on the side of the hill. But they were making naive, and deadly mistakes. Literally standing in the middle of the street under the lights 200m from the BDM and machine gun emplacement. maturin 12 Posted November 5, 2011 Yeah, they don't know to hide from light sources and static positions. Basically, they're always trying to take cover and watch their sectors in formation, but this only works right about 20% of the time. It's just too complex for non-human brains in an open environment.
fireone 10 Posted November 5, 2011 And does the AI behaviour (for friendlies ) improve the further you get into arma or is it necessary to deploy them in a way that keeps them out of harms way as happened in this mission?
maturin 12 Posted November 5, 2011 And does the AI behaviour (for friendlies ) improve the further you get into armaor is it necessary to deploy them in a way that keeps them out of harms way as happened in this mission? They improve with (marginally) with higher unit skill, but most of all with more experienced commanders, AI mods and environments with lots of cover (rather than a maze of buildings). If you take AI into CQB with numerous or armored enemies, you are going to take casualties. But in other situations or where casualties are acceptable, the AI are capable fighters. It's a good idea to let them lag behind you, so you can draw fire from enemies so they can acquire them. If you get a line of AI in slight concealment, prone and waiting, they can wipe out scores of running enemies.
fireone 10 Posted November 5, 2011 Thanks for that insight . Useful to know , if used well , the AI friendlies can genuinely help. As they did in this SP mission. Thanks again
