Wobble

Insurance makes no sense

Recommended Posts

Wobble's truck: V6, 4x4, 0-60 10 seconds speedo goes to 100(160 kmh ). top speed ~110

Wobbles new car: Turbocharged DOHC intercooled I-4, FWD, 0-60 5-6 seconds speedo goes to 170(273 kmh)

top speed 140+

yet the CAR is cheaper by $15 per month for insurance!

wow.gifconfused.gif

only 90 buckaroos a month for full coverage..

I know vehicles are priced via insurance by a point system, anyonw know why the car would be cheaper than the truck to insure? or better yet WHERE is a table showing the point system?

it depends on cars becuase of their history.

i'm not sure why, but here's the rough mechanism of determining insurance premium.

1.collest data on car models

2.have some calculations done on each group(model and yr and etc). this is painful job, and during th e process, here's what they are looking at: average cost of claim for car, like accidents and so forth. accident rate, survival rate and other factors go into there too.

3.calculated result gets combined with market data.

in your case, truck could have bigger premium cost since

1.it breaks down easily than a car, thus rising cost of claim.

2.there are more demand for truck then cars recently, thus insurance company can charge a little more for your truck premium than car tahnx to virtue of supply and demand.

this is my speculation, so don't hold me to it..hope this helps smile.gif

hmm, that does make quite a bit of sense, though the truck doesent break down.. well it never has (140K miles) dunno bout the car *yet* since its still new (to me)

they usualy look at data from aggregated number of trucks, not just particular. and so far a lot of trucks are used by ppl who work tough and rough, so maybe that's the reason why there claim cost is high since it breaks down more often.

I would consider myself a car freak (somewhat), and judging from the description of your "new" car, it seems to be a coupe, sporty in nature, possibly manufactured by the Japanese or the Koreans.

Your old truck's 4X4 feature is considered safer than FWD. Don't forget that 2-door cars like a coupe post risk to those in the back seats. Its sporty nature also implies you will no doubt drive it in a "sporty" manner. Also its low height and ground clearance put you in a bigger danger if you get hit than if you were in a truck, which can take more of a beating and protect you better.

There are of course other totally minor features which still end up making a difference regardless. Daytime running lights ? Automatic safety belts ? Dual side airbags. and blah and blah.

Just as Wiggum pointed out, car's overall safety record (brand/model), and a couple of dozen other features.

I personally prefer buying a car in full instead of leasing/financing it as that way I only need the minimum insurance.

Young(er) males w/ 4x4s = perceived tendency to drive off cliffs, into rivers, up trees, over Hondas, etc.

Ricers, heh.  I don't know how bad they are in TX but here in SoCal it's ridiculous.  Ever since "The Fake and the Fictitious" came out every 15-year old kid with a fart-piped Civic thinks he's Vin Diesel.

I don't have any insurances. I don't believe in it. The companies makes money on it, which would mean I as a ensurance-taker would lose money on it ... it's that simple. Besides, if one ever tries to actually collect an ensurance payment, they'll just come up with some obscure reason why you won't get a dime. tounge.gif

Ill never go without it, the risk is too great.. you could have a 30K car and then someone ELSE without insurance runs into it while its parked.. you have.. scrap.. or fix out of pocket..

here in California, insurance is a must for all drivers. it's the state law.

many ppl claim that insurance is a fraud and someone(like Ned Flanders) consider it as a gambling.

i'd rather say that it's gambling than fraud.

when insurance companies look at you, they look at the group you'll be associated with. and that data will be used to determine your premium. even in you are in that group, you can be better driver or worse driver. but when commpany deals with group, they are correct in that manner too.

they can't distinguish between good driver like you and bad driver. so that's why they seem to be frauds.
