Few questions need answering about multiplayer?

Recommended Posts

Hello my name is JMareel ([V-sog]JMareel & [GUN]JMareel when playing or on mirc) and I am the PR Director for GUN (Gaming Unlimited Network). I have a few questions about OFP and setting up mp maps and servers. Can you please answer them for me if you are knowledgeable even about one of them. I would really appreciate it as we are working on a big project.

1) What are the maximum dimensions/limits of a "map" that you can have? i.e. 5 X 5 miles, 10 X 10 miles, etc. If it isn't like that then can you please explain the dimensions and its limitations.

2) Can you, as admin, setup either your own spawn points for both teams on the fly 15min. before a match or have random spawn points generated 15min. before the fly OR is it a lengthy process to set spawn points?

3) Can anyone send me the full big map in .jpg or .gif versions of all 3 islands (Everon, Malden, Kolgujev)? I found a site, 3Dactionplanet.com, but the links are broken =(. I need the full big version that you see in the game.

I would greatly appreciate the help.

answers:

to 1) I don't really understand what you mean by "map". Anyway the islands are always completely loaded, so it doesn't really matter whether you have a mission that takes place in a very small area or a huge area.

to 2) spawn points are set in the mission editor. You could write a script that changes the position of the spawn point.

to 3) you can find maps of the islands on the cdrom in the maps directory, the files are in PDF format (use acrobat reader to view them)

Aldega,

As far as #2 is concerned can you please direct me to where I can find the script that allows me to change the spawn points? Thanks.

What I mean by #1 is are you limited to playing within a box a couple of miles big X a couple of miles big and you are not allowed to venture out of that boundary (invisible wall) or if you are online and playing a clan match can you practically run from the enemy all the way to the opposite shore on the other side of the island?

size of the map/island is 12.8km by 12.8km(in miles, that yould be about 9miles by 9miles)

however, if you go out side of that, it'll be just endless ocean.

however, actually island land is less than 12.8X12.8, think somewhere around 9X9km.

goto mission editor, and try for it yourself. tounge.gifbiggrin.gifsmile.gif

actually there are small isles around main isle that you can run around.

Malden:SE of main island(a.k.a. NATO base), NW of main island(with a small air strip)

Everon: NW of main island. NE of main isle(2 of them) SW of main isle(1 modest sized, 1 small)

ad you can also use desert isle.

You cant change spawn points. Once the misseion creator puts them in. they are there for good.

Actually, it occurred to me that one could use the mission parameters (Param1 and Param2) to select a set of spawn points at runtime. The numeric parameter could be an index into a table, which could contain the coordinates.

Just a thought...

I think frag is talking about the parameters you can handover to the missions in the dedicated server configuration file loaded at startup of the dedicated server. There is also a command to reload this file while the server is running. Unfortunatly you can't load a different config file. So you have to edit the file and reload it, but this can only be done when you have access to the maschine => owner of the server. Furthermore, there are missions with dynamic spawn areas, bound to vehicles (I remember now two missions using this, Arudy and Anhoehe, both popular on some german servers, but there are more missions like that).

About the maps, it has been already said. Generally, the whole island is loaded and you are not limited in that way. However, some missions (usually Deathmatches) have a killing zone around the 'playground' to keep all players in a specific area.
