LotharQberry 10 Posted August 3, 2011 Hello Everyone, I have a friend who has ARMA II Free and I just purchased Combined Forces. He and I are basically brand new to the game and we were hoping someone would be able to point us to an online multiplayer fighter map were we could play against each other and/or or against 2 other players. If there is a particular online server that you folks would recommend for us, that would be very helpful also. Please remember though that he has the free version of ARMA II Thank you,

LotharQberry 10 Posted August 3, 2011 Thank you for the quick response. When I'm at the server browser what would be the name of the actual server.
celery 8 Posted August 3, 2011 There is no server unless you get the missions and host them.
walker 0 Posted August 4, 2011 (edited) Hi LotharQberry Options There are three methods for doing what you want: Quick dirty method for 2 to 8 or 12 players (Depends on broadband upload speed)If it is just you and a friend you are probably best just hosting the maps on your client as Celery says. Hosting is fairly simple on a client and is explained in the ArmA 2 manual on page 22. I played some fighter games with my brother that way, where we had to bomb a target object on each others airfield and shoot down our opponent to prevent it, surprisingly ArmA is a good Arcade flight Sim. You can get away with up to 12 players hosting on a standard broadband connection, but you will see warping as you get more players. Computer literate method for 12 to 24 players (Depends on broadband upload speed)If you want to play with more players and you have four or more cores on your computer, then it is probably worth running a dedicated server alongside your client on your computer. If you have a spare hi speed multi core but low graphics computer you can set up dedicated server on it, that is a slightly better option. For PvP you need to have the config tailored to PvP rather than the PvP/AI balance that is default. Celery is a kind man and can probably point you to a good PvP config setting file.Setting up a dedicated server is explained here:http://www.kellys-heroes.eu/files/tutorials/dedicated/ Computer literate method for up to ~100 players (Depends on broadband upload speed)For larger numbers you really need a dedicated server hosted at a colo on a fat broadband connection. That is what the larger ArmA 2 communities do. Kind Regards walker Edited August 4, 2011 by walker

Please remember though that he has the free version of ARMA II Thank you, It sounds like you might not be aware that you can host these maps yourselves. One of you starts a New MP game (using maybe one of Celery's recommended downloadable missions) and the other person joins it. It can be a little fiddly if it's your first time to do this, but once you have it sorted you'll be good to go. Name your MP gaming session something easily searchable/filterable and the joining person should have no problem finding it.
LotharQberry 10 Posted August 4, 2011 Thanks for the info guys. It really is appreciated. I know that I can start my own server if I want but that gets into configuring the router with port addresses and I was hoping to stay away from that because 1) I'm lazy and 2) Ive had issues getting this stuff to work in the past with other games. I was really just wanting for someone to point me to a current server that might have something like this set up but if creating my own server is my best option then I'll give it a shot. Is there a particular mission in standard edition Arma II that would suit our needs for some PVP air wars? Please remember that he is using the free version. walker 0 Posted August 4, 2011 (edited) Hi LotharQberry I have altered my post to make the options more clear. As you made it clear it is for just you and a friend then as every else is saying you need to choose option 1) :) Celery pointed you at some options for missions that may do what you need, they may even be in editable form so that you can use them as starting points to create what you want. As he said you need to go to Armaholic for these: http://www.armaholic.com/list.php?c=arma2_files_scenarios You can also try ArmA Info http://www.armedassault.info/index.php?cat=multi&avlang=0&mod=0&style=4&sort=date&order=desc&type=0&game=1 You can also try this forums user mission area: http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86 using the search this forum function; right hand navigation, it may help you find something. Making a post there, requesting such a mission may prove more effective than posting in general. And rather easily you can use the editor in ArmA 2 Free to create the exact type of game you want. That is what most of us do. ;) So searching the mission editing section may also prove fruitful http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=93 Kind Regards walker Edited August 4, 2011 by walker
