paolo2015 10 Posted July 1, 2011 (edited) I'm halfway through it, and I find it intriguing, for some aspects. What pissed me is the total lack of info about what really is the selection process to go from "normal" Seals to Six. All the book says is that these guys do a lot of training, without any particular hint about the covert life or about what the training consists of. In comparison "Immediate Action" by ex sas Andy McNab seems a daily diary. What do you think? Edited July 1, 2011 by paolo2015
JdB 151 Posted July 1, 2011 I haven't read that book yet. The kind of selection procedure that Tier 1 units use is quite accurately described in the book "Inside Delta Force: The Story of America's Elite Counterterrorist Unit". I'm sure the specific methods have changed a bit over the years, but the basic principle of being tested to the absolute limit (and quite often over it) is an age old favorite right back to the Greek city states. It also talks about the covert life quite a lot. One of the most interesting things about CT (/Tier 1) selection imo is that for these kinds of units, they pick you, not the other way around. Not going into such a team because you want it for money (when they retire to the private sector), status etc, but because they think you are capable enough. ralphwiggum 6 Posted July 2, 2011 IIRC, the book isn't just about what it is like in the team. Don't expect the book to spell it out for all to see. As for Insid Delta Force, a lot of information seems to be outdated.

Well, Seal Team Six under Marcinko was a damn joke. You got picked depending on things like if you could be one of his cronies, how well you kissed his ass, etc. Hopefully it's not like that these days. I doubt it is, as times have changed & most people don't put up with that shit. Another good book to look into is "SEAL!: From Vietnam's Phoenix Program to Central America's Drug Wars" http://www.amazon.com/SEAL-Vietnams-Phoenix-Program-Americas/dp/0671868535/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1309643557&sr=1-1 Michael Walsh & some of his teammates actually had planned how to assassinate Jane Fonda. They found out what routes she used driving home, they even hired a guy (a vet IIRC) who knew the area, and who would drive by the house at full speed while the takedown was in progress, in order to confuse people about what was going on & to (i assume) draw any police away. Ah, how much better the world would be if they had gone through with it. (An NCO caught them I think, been a while since I read it)
