JoeHazzers 10 Posted March 14, 2011 Hi, I'm trying to host a linux dedicated server, but i'm in a bit of a tight spot. I need to upload all of the game files, but due to my amazingly low upload speed, it's completely absurd to try and upload the OA game files to the server. Does BI not allow server administrators to download the game files required to run the server directly? Other server software I use (srcds comes to mind) allows you to download the required content to run the server. Why does BI not offer this? It seems very absurd. Gunter Severloh 4088 Posted March 14, 2011 I dont see whats absurd about it, would you have a link to your game files that you spent years creating with a whole team that anyone can download for free? I think not. And download from where? BIS made the game, unless they had official servers that they run and had administrated then it would be a possibility that you could do what you asking, but they dont do that, nor ever have. If you had a gameserver then the host would have your selected game already installed plus patched.
JoeHazzers 10 Posted March 14, 2011 I dont see whats absurd about it Several gigabytes upload over an ADSL connection with very small upload bandwidth would you have a link to your game files that you spent years creating with a whole team that anyone can download for free?I think not. I would, it would be a futile attempt to try and stop illegal downloading. The only thing in the way of piracy is the copy protection. Seems irrelevant in this situation. Valve allow public download of the server content. I think they set a good example. And download from where? BIS made the game, unless they had official servers that they run and had administrated then it would be a possibilitythat you could do what you asking, but they dont do that, nor ever have. Why not? I have a dedicated server I use to host several things, many other developers allow easy access to the needed server files. Seems perfectly reasonable for people trying to host servers. Let me make it a suggestion then: I suggest that BIS allow download of the files that the server needs through the dedicated server software itself If you had a gameserver then the host would have your selected game already installed plus patched. Managed hosting? no thanks. BIS seem to make it very easy to access the dedicated server software, but it seems that it's very difficult to actually get the additional files you need. Maybe I can instead make an open request to get the files?
Gunter Severloh 4088 Posted March 14, 2011 Managed hosting? no thanks. Whats wrong with it? I have my own gameserver, that I am admin of, only thing the host does is provide support when and if i need it, otherwise I have a ftp setup, I setup server profiles, server configuration, pw, missions, ect,. I basically run the show, for $10 a month I cant go wrong. Maybe I can instead make an open request to get the files your points are valid, but as for what you said here you can try, but not sure what they would do. Maybe make a suggestion in the suggestions section about this and see what response you get, of course make sure you search first to make sure it hasn't been already asked. SWAT_BigBear 0 Posted March 15, 2011 (edited) Considering most popular games now a day require "renting from them", be glad you still have the option to privately run ArmA on your dedi.;) I used ADSL and simply made small uploads until completed, yes it takes a couple of days, or you can purchase an ArmA copy directly to your server and use it's bandwidth.
