Campaign vs. Single missions (enemy abilities)

Recommended Posts

I can vanquish the enemies in the Campaigns easier than the enemies in the single missions. In the single missions, I seem to get my ball bag shot off quite frequently, but in campaign I can best the enemy more often. I have adjusted the difficulty sliders in the EDIT mode of Game Option to dumb down the enemy yet they still murder me and my squad with great frequency in single missions, and this even if I turn my friendly AI difficulty sliders to expert. Running version 1.08/1.57. For instance the War Welcome single mission in Arma 2, my AI squad and I are dog meat by the time we get beyond the fence at the first airfield. Perhaps I simply suck at the game, but my AI squad mates set to expert I have higher expectations of...

The AI uses CPU power, the more there are the more it needs to be distributed.

Therefor, 10 AI's get more 'brainpower' than 100 AI's.

The missions from the campaign can get quite big and have countless AI running about, so that would explain why they seem less smart than when you are playing smaller-sized missions.

that doesn't sound right at all. i think it's up to mission design. how concentrated and how numerous the enemy placement is.

I have enough CPU power for the AI, the single mission War Welcome runs at a very playable frame rate (1600 x 900, AA off), although I don't know the exact avg fps it feels smooth and there are a ton of enemies so there should be a lot of AI activity on the CPU. But, my AI squad and I get murdered fairly reliably even in the My Missions auto-generated missions in Combat mode where the enemies are much fewer, but then I tend to play those in Takistan where there is little cover and you're basically out in the open walking around.

exactly what setting did you turn the enemy ai down to?

Try turning them down to 1 as a testing point, and if you're still having a hard time then you simply need more practice.

You can also go into your player profile file (arma2profile and arma2OAprofile) in the my documents folder and in there you can specify an exact setting for enemy skill level (try 0.5 or above...this makes them more or less active/aggressive) and a separate setting for their precision (turn this down to something like 0.3 or even lower if you need practice...this controls how accurate their shots are).

High skill coupled with low accuracy typically makes for a more enjoyable experience and longer fire fights without having to worry too much about getting shot in the head from 300m by an enemy machine gunner, lol.

Keep in mind that if you manually set these variables in your players profile file they will get over written if you then try to set them again within the game options menu. So if you set them manually outside the game then you should stay away from setting it in-game. (this is because the game options menu is not capable of distinguishing between separate skill and precision settings so if you change one of them in-game it ends up changing BOTH for you (wish after all these years they would have fixed that but nah)

Thanks for that info on setting the skill and accuracy in the cfg files, BigShot! Exactly the kind of info I was looking for!

you're welcome!

oh, and just to correct myself...when i said to turn the ai precision down to 1 as a starting point to practice with i actually meant 0.10 (BIG difference as 1.0 is the highest setting!, lol)
