8800GTS 512mb SLI

Recommended Posts

I have an old Alienware PC from 2008 with these cards. Normally my cards run 52C, but lately it has been cold outside so we have the AC off and unfortunately that increased the temp of my PC. =/

Right now because it is warmer inside my home than it is outside, my cards temp is sitting around 56C and when I play ARMA is jumps to about 62 and sometimes 65C. I'd like to turn the AC back on, but I would get screamed at by some girl. lol

Are there some settings that I can change to make the load on my cards less? Will changing the in game graphics help out much in terms of heat? Right now I am running everything on the normal setting in game.

I wouldn't worry about the those temps. A little high, but certainly nothing to worry with. You're building more heat with the SLi anyway. (obviously)

If you're not running any GPU tools the fan(s) is most likely in auto mode, and at those temps might not even demand 100%. Most tools allow for easy manual control over the fan.

Reducing settings could in therory help, wouldn't be significant though. Again, wouldn't worry with it. Start hitting the mid 80's ... then maybe turn the fan up ;)

nTune (nVidias tool)

Cheers

I actually keep both fans manually at 100%.

If I have both fans off, at idle in SLI my cards would run a hot 70C. However, if I shut SLI off then my one card will run about 60C at idle. Perhaps something is wrong with my computer, or it is just getting outdated. I just don't have the money to purchase a better one or upgrade any of the components.

I'm going to turn SLI off and see how much of a difference it makes.

Edit: What does the "Tune" option under Performance in the NVIDIA control panel do?

If you're holding 60's ... even at 100% fan, I wouldn't worry about it. Those cards, especially in SLi will run in the mid 80's on a pretty regular basis.

I used to run 2-8800GTs, then went to Ultras. I've seen high 80's in long benches with no issues. Currently run Tri GTX285s, on water though ... got tired of all the heat and fan noise. If you know what I mean ;)

Do you normally turn your fan off? Is the fan off on the card that idles at 60 with no Sli?

60-70 idle is not normal. Assuming the fan is on. Cards heating up in SLi is common, nature of the beasts squeezed into the little box. Again, 60-70's in-game I would consider normal for those cards. If you've done better before, perhaps it's just the climate as you mentioned. ;)

Indeed, the fans can be loud at times.

With no fans on and no SLI on, card one will idle at about 58C to 60C. With both card fans on at 100% and SLI on, card one will run 52C and card two will run a little cooler at 51C, but that is when it is not warm in my home.

Right now it is warm in my home so card one is at 57 and card two is at 56 with both fans on 100%. When I am playing ARMA2:OA, I saw was 67C on both cards, I did see it peak at 69C though.

I'm just one paranoid person when it comes to my PC. My last PC I had, I upgraded the graphics card and a week later I woke up to my PC shooting sparks out of the back. I was so upset and sad at the same time. lol =D

Haha, yeah sparks are not good, I understand the concern. I thought the same thing the first time I fired up the SLi. While your temps are a little warmer than baseline normal, you'll be just fine.

If it makes you feel better, I have a brother who's played Fallout in the low 90's for a couple years now.

Think he's running dual 8800GTS somethings ... I think my old 640mb cards? Some wierd ram set, anyway ... think he cooks breakfast on the side of his case.

8800 were known to run hotter than previous and current cards. Just the way they were built.

In other words, it normal. If you are concerned about it, you could increase your fan speed using Riva tuner.
