Hills block AI's view?

Recommended Posts

I know that (as I understand it), the AI don't have a line of sight type vision, but instead it's a collection of plusses and minuses (in the 'visibilty' variable) based on the terrain you are on, your camaflage, your stance, your amount of movement, etc.

But, if this is the case, do hills block their line of sight (so to speak) of you?

If I am crawling on the opposite side of a small hill, and I should (in reality) not be visible to the enemy (as there's a hill between us), does the A2 engine take that in to account, even though it's not (supposedly) doing a line of sight thing?

Is it safe to say that if MY view is blocked of him, he can't see me (...but, of course, can hear me, etc)?

I just want o know if I'm wasting my time keeping down behind hills, or in ditches, where I supposedly would not be visible to the enemy.

Oh, also... since I am in the neighbourhood... I'm assuming that being in shadow and in a pool of light affect my visibility to the AI as well? Hiding in shadows vs under a street light makes a difference?

About the effect of the light sources on the AI, it was corrected in the 1.54 patch for OA/CO.

About the effect of the hill on the line of sight, i always add the feeling that it blocked the AI view, which is only "guessing" where you are considering your last known position and speed.

Land definitely blocks AI Line of Sight. That said, you can run across some weirdness with Team Leaders calling targets through 50m of earth or a few feet of surface soil.

So, I guess their engine does a line of sight thing for terrain, buildings/walls... but otherwise uses the terrain/vegitation maps (what 'tile' you are standing on) with a plus/minus to the 'visibilty' variable kind of thing for everything else?

Do shadows really have an effect on AI?

Well i understood "shadows" as "non lighted places", not object shadows.

But that's a suggestion thread. I'm not suggesting anything. I was asking if it uses eyeline. I would have thought that putting my question there would have been an incorrect post.

Your right ladlon, it is mainly for suggestions, then a suggestion lol i would like to make

is to make a AI sticky thread for Q & A for questions and others

related to AI here in the General forum section.

Ya, there's often a lot of overlap in subjects, it's hard to figure out where to put them sometimes!

This technically could even go in the 'All Rookies Ask Your Questions Here' section too... assuming I'm a rookie! (I'm not even sure!)
