Official BIS Mission Tutorial

Recommended Posts

I went through the official BIS Mission Tutorial that BIS posted today, and I have to say that is some good stuff. For some reason when I saved the .sqf file it would only save as .txt (even after setting it to different types of files in "save as". It just wouldn't save anything other than .txt in both Wordpad and Notepad. But I was able to download the original missions from the announcement thread and copy BIS' .sqf file into my mission folder and then it worked as demonstrated.

Another question, how did BIS get the two vehicles to be in column formation at the start? Whenever I did it "my" vehicle (2nd in formation) was off road to the side, even after placing it on the road directly behind the first vehicle as in the tutorial. Can't figure that out...

But thanks BIS, I'd like to see a tutorial on how to create a campaign. I've figured some things out, but it would be nice to see an official tutorial on this.

EDIT: Here's the link to the official announcement if you didn't find it already... http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?p=1750876#post1750876

The unit's special field was set to None.

The thing to realize is that AI units will try to move back into formation once they game starts even with the None selected. You can see that in the example mission as the trailing car moves slightly to get into position.

Ah, that makes sense to me now. Thanks for posting kylania!

UPDATE: I made the changes and it works! I had no doubt of course but I wanted to post to you that it is working as intended. I've also made some changes to the mission, I added in a full section of infantry for the two Jackal 2 MWMIK (HMG); four per vehicle, so now the Commander and Gunner positions are manned in both vehicles. I also added a second OPFOR Team (Squad Leader, AT Specialist (RPG-7), 2x Rifleman) to increase the challenge a bit, and I added the First Aid functions as well.

Yup, it's really impressive how quickly you can add challenges to a mission with just a few clicks of the mouse. :)

Sure is!

I would also like to see a tutorial on how to make a briefing, with some Intros and Outros added to the mission. That would be most helpful!

Thanks for posting kylania!

Byker! Byker! Byker Grove!

Nice tutorials. Although aimed at the beginner there was a couple things I didn't know about before.

Nice job BIS.

Great to see you trying to expand upon the tutorial - that's exactly what it's there for.

In regard to your problem, be sure to check the note that pops up on screen during the tutorial - perhaps it is a little too short, but essentially it explains that sometimes Windows requires you to change a setting in the Control Panel, so that you can modify the file extension - i.e. changing from .txt to .whatever..

This: yes. ;)

RiE

EDIT: although, duty calls that I should point out editing threads should be posted here .. :)

My script examples page (linked in my sig) has a demo that shows a single player intro leading into the game. There's also a tasks demo (not Briefing one yet though, soon!)

You'll find answers to all of this over on the Mission Editing and Scripting forums though.

Thank you again kylania. I will check out those links as soon as I'm done with this reply!

I agree Snafu, and I have made many missions for me and my friends to play, but I sure learned alot from that tutorial! I hope to learn more.

Wow, thanks for the reply RoyaltyinExile! I surely do appreciate it. I surely did miss the pop-up note in the tutorial video. I will check it over again and check my save settings in Control Panel.

Sorry about the wrong forum, please feel free to move this thread to where it belongs.

Thanks for the heads-up, I had the same problem and didn't notice the pup-up
