What is "overclocking"

Recommended Posts

ive heard about overlocking your processor, but what is it, I know it has to do with making your processor run faster. And how do you do it, and are there any downsides.

edit: i think the title should read overlocking

No, your title was right it's called "overclocking". Overclocking is inderectly changing the frequency that the cpu operates on.

You have to have a bios that supports it and a cooling system that can handle it. The downside is the risk of overheating and the system can be unstable.

The fequency of the CPU = FSB Frequency x Multiplier

You can either change the Front Side Bus frequency or the multiplier. You do it in the bios.

For what it is worth, most systems sold in retail stores aren't capable of being overclocked, at least not through the BIOS.

The companies that manufacture the systems simply don't want to deal with idiots who go into the BIOS configuration screens and tweak the heck out of their systems, and then either can't get past the POST, or crash when trying to do real work.

Thus, the features to change the FSB speed or core voltages etc. are usually not accessible. There are programs that can accomplish the same thing, but they support only specific processors and chipsets.

If you tell us a bit more about your system, we can get into more specifics.
