glockster21 0 Posted April 28, 2002 Is anyone using or has anyone used memmax memory optimizer. The software is supposed to free up RAM and let your computer run smoother. Does it smooth up OFP on the higher graphics settings? TIA
N.o.R.S.u 0 Posted April 28, 2002 I used Memmaker to get more basic memory (max 640kb) to my old computer but something went wrong and my comp almost screwed up. Never heard about memmax but I fear it may have negative consequences.

I do not use programs, which recover/force RAM automatically *during* a program (games particular) runs, because that can cause fatal errors. --- My settings: Optimization: Free 100% and Try 2 times (and 'Max' / 'Force' not ticked) Especially with OFP, I am running MemMax once before starting OFP, and then, while in the game (mission already loaded) I'm switching back to desktop and run it once more. --- That will ensure, OFP(other games) is run within the maximum amount of RAM there is. Nevertheless, OFP *does* need an swapfile of at least 300(400)MB, but this initial procedure makes sure, OFP is run in RAM for the most part. About your question: If your computer runs slow in the higher graphic settings, MemMax will not/cannot *speed up* OFP for you. All of the above procedure however will make sure the main part of OFP(other games) is readily avaiable in RAM, thus decreasing loading times *during* the game. If you do it like described above, you will notice the following: After switching to desktop and running MemMax(Try 2 times), then switching back to OFP, your screen will stay blank for a while (OFP, while still running in backround, was swapped out completely during the optimization and is now read into RAM again) Dont worry, that is normal. Once you are in OFP again, your initial turning will lag heavily (because OFP needs to load certain textures around you again) but after that, loading times from HDD are minimal = smooth gameplay! Also, loading new missions goes alot faster then. There; again, it will not *speed up* your computer, if it is not capable to run OFP(in higher res) in the first place;..but it will minimize loading times during the game, thus 'feel' smoother. One more. If you only have 128 (even 256; tested) MB of RAM, MemMax can do nothing for you. To be effective with OFP, you should at least have 384 or even 512MB of RAM. And remember the swapfile;..no matter the amount of RAM, OFP must have it's swapfile..
