Hosting DS on cloud servers

Recommended Posts

I came across this: http://www.gigenetcloud.com and my first thought was naturally "Oooh, A2-server!". Has anyone tried hosting with cloud servers? I'm curious as to what the performance would be as I suspect it would still be low due to threading and overhead and the fact that they don't do dynamic threading if that's even usable. I have no idea how it works or how much CPU and RAM that would be optimal (as A2 probably can't utilize much anyways), so if anyone has any experience here please speak up.

I use Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to create a Windows server once in a while...it's much cheaper than a hosted solution for me since I have no desire for a full-time server. I can spin up a server instance when I need it and configure it exactly the way I want it.

That said, it's not something I'd recommend if you're going to want a server running 24/7 with since the hourly costs add up. I haven't tried a Linux server but I know that would be cheaper than a Windows instance. Also, I'm only using the server for myself and a friend or two. If you're looking for a server to host a large group of players, you'd need a high-CPU instance and that would, of course, cost more.

I've been meaning to write up a step-by-step guide for how to run Arma/Arma2 in Amazon's EC2 cloud...hopefully one of these days I'll sit down and actually write it!

Well I wasn't planning on a 24/7, just a monster rig that I can access a couple of hours every week. I was looking at the tutorial I found and you can spec it up to 25 cGHz (whatever that is, combined GHz perhaps?) and up to 64 GB ram but only two cores. They only offer Win2003/2008 server though (and linux ofcourse) but I'm not sure how DS works on that. Anyone know?

I'm thinking of just testing to see if I can get monster FPS and no teleporting but my experience is that Arma never utilize monster rigs particularly well.

Yeah i saw that (and even commented on it) but I don't get what you're saying. Even with 120 ai on the i7 you still only get about 5-10 fps and not enough power to run the scripts. And i don't know how arma will respond to a cloud server running e.g. 20 cGHz on two cores as there aren't that many threads and it's not like they have a real 20GHz CPU. Like what would be the optimal freq., corenumber and ram be for a 120 ai mission, what should exThreads be, etc.
