CTD: disk dirty/damaged

Recommended Posts

My game recently starts to crash to desktop with an error in arma2.rpt:

There’s a problem with the disc you’re using. It may be dirty or damaged.

I checked thoroughly and my disk is not dirty or damaged. Also the lens is working fine. The DVD-RW (DL) station is fairly new (bought in June).

I also successfully made an .iso image of the disk to see if there were any read errors.

The crash happens at random. Read errors happen on different files on the disk (so far on addons\characters2.pbo, addons\roads2.pbo and addons\plant2_tree.pbo).

Whenever I've had the error, I've been playing multiplayer for more than an hour.

EDIT:

Every time the error occurs it is preceded by about 200 times a variant of:

Memory store: Failed mapping, already mapped 2924 KB, error 8

Virtual free 23773184 B, page free -1 B, physical free -1 B

/EDIT

I'm playing v1.04.59210 beta with parameters:

-winxp -cpucount=4 -maxmem=2047 -mod=beta

I'm not using any mods.

My system specs are in my signature (spoiler).

Any suggestions?

It must be the files on the hard drive that are corrupted, the game doesn't load anything from the disc, it only checks it as an anti-piracy measure.

A re-install should help. It might be a sign your hard drive is not going to last much longer though.

Do not use maxmem.

Try without winxp.

Try cpuCount 1.

Make a scandisk for errors on the HDD.

The beta does not need the DVD.

Thanks for your replies.

The whole computer system is now a year old, and has not been running from February to June. It would be strange if the hard disk was failing already. :-/

I'll try reinstalling the game and see what happens.

As for the parameters:

I need maxmem to get rid of "Out of Memory" crashes to desktop.

I need winxp to get rid of the 8GB RAM texture issues.

I did a scandisk (chkdsk, as scandisk can't check NTFS drives) and haven't found any errors whatsoever.

I'll also try playing without DVD.

I'll keep you posted about developments.

I tried:

1. Reinstalling the game

2. -cpucount=1 - causes "cannot commit" errors

3. Remove -cpucount - causes "cannot commit" errors

4. Play without DVD

Nothing fixed it.

Any further suggestions?

try a fresh install of XP on a second partition.

I don't have a partition available to install additional operating systems.

I'm running Windows 7 RTM (build 7600), which should be fine.

Set the video memory to normal and then adjust the rest of your graphic options.

Might help, might not.

It solved a similar error crash for me.

I've started getting this too. Didn't touch vid memory settings.. only thing different is that I'm running a ramdisk that is taking up 4gb of ram out of a total of 8.

I think the issue is the windows page file.

File read error: f:\@ramdisk\addons\characters2.pbo,ERROR_NOACCESS

Error 3e6 reading file 'f:\@ramdisk\addons\characters2.pbo'

ErrorMessage: There’s a problem with the disc you’re using. It may be dirty or damaged.

Error 3e6 reading file 'f:\@ramdisk\addons\characters2.pbo'

Note the 'page free -1 B'.. this is what causes the 'disc error', its not a disc error at all.. its just that it cant read that file because it can't map memory for it.

The problem disappeared for me. I did numerous tweaks to not only solve this problem.

I guess moving the page file to a separate physical drive solves this issue.
